A severely underrated legend and lyrical genius. She also is a visual artist and mother - so she can basically do it all and I find this very inspiring. Her storytelling is unmatched. My favorite album of hers is Alas I Cannot Swim (which I’ve linked), however she has quite a bit of really great music to check out. Her upcoming album, Patterns in Repeat, comes out in October.

I’m slowly making my way through Joanna’s discography. I spent a lot of time listening to her album Ys which is incredible, but finally Have One On Me is starting to click. Joanna’s songs are often so long and unconventionally structured that they take a while to settle in but oh my god this album is so good. I also love watching videos of her performing, she’s insanely precise with her playing and singing it’s super impressive. The title track and Soft As Chalk are currently my favorites.

this album was performed live as part of the last night of “eldorado ballroom” for saint heron and la philharmonic curated by solange and how i discovered it. it’s mostly a jazz album but with 3 or 4 songs that are masses. it’s a beautifully haunting and complex piece of art!

Refutation is exhausting. What if everyone was right and everything was true? Big load off my back honestly

I play this 12 hours of applause when painting or writing it helps me feel encouraged. Nobody applauds at an art show which has always been a bummer to me
