I’ve been on an Actors on Actors / Hollywood Roundtable kick and I stumbled upon the Viola Davis x Jennifer Lawrence one a couple days ago where Jenn talks about making Causeway. The whole episode was really engaging and spoke levels about the film industry. They end up really connecting on the basis that as parents, kids, and generally just humans, you will always know failure, but that’s the breeding ground for vulnerability and connection. I don’t think I could have watched Causeway any other way than by watching that interview first. I liked the throughline of the pools being a place for shame, exposure, embarrassment but also deep social understanding and love. Even if you’re left alone in the pool once, you always have to get back in the water.

I watched this film on Netflix a few days after it first came out and I cannot recommend it enough. It takes you on the deeply emotional journey of the scientists behind the development of IVF particularly Jean Purdy as well as the women undergoing the treatment. The film also tackles the reaction of the public to this new found medical treatment with religious people believing it go be playing god and others viewing them as mad scientists. The cast is also phenomenal with Thomasin McKenzie taking on the the main role as well as many other amazing actors I've recognized from other shows and movies. This feminist story of science history is well worth the watch in my opinion.

I had not heard of this movie prior to seeing a clip of Julia Fox pulling it in her Criterion interview, and decided randomly to watch it this morning.
It articulates such a wide and deep and complex understanding of womanhood, motherhood, loyalty, grief, and identity.
Specific praise to the cinematography and to the set design.
Highly highly highly recommend.
