Staying at the Roxy in NY (formerly the Tribeca Grand) is akin to being on an elegant cruise in Manhattan. It’s my home away from home in the city. Everything is there: from live jazz in the massive atrium lobby with the glass elevator zipping up and down and the divine food and drinks (I recommend the lobster roll and a mescal cocktail) in recessed leather booths shaped like teacups, to the gorgeous red velvet theater below - which offers the best films on screen in Manhattan - curated by the brilliant Illyse Singer. After attending a killer film and fascinating Q&A, retreat to the Django, the speakeasy next door, which stays open til 4AM and is often where the hottest underground music acts play… What else could you ask for?Β

Made a WhatsApp group with all my film friends in it and have been using it coordinate going to screenings. It's so much fun! There's loads of little independent screenings happening where I live and some very good independent cinemas, but even if all you have is a TV you should start a film club too. This evening I'm off to an old pub that's been converted into an events space to watch The Garden by Derek Jarman 😎

Back in the day Kenji (who worked at Serious Eats and wrote some of the best NYTCooking recipes) used to make these "late night" videos where--clearly tired and/or drunk from a night's work--he'd strap a gopro on his noggin and make cheap grub while huffing and sighing heavily (in the daytime videos he tells you about the recipe) and it makes me so happy to know pro chefs also make drunk meals

it sounds stupid and pretentious but every time I see one of those old school British actors recite some old Wordsworth poem i think damn you really did it!!! Or George Steiner has those beautiful stories about the value of Talmudic memory during the holocaust, or Pasternak standing up to Stalin during the Soviet Writer's Conference in the 30s surely to be arrested and making everyone recite Shakespeare's "I summon up remembrance of things past.." its so powerful!!! Recitation and memory has such strength to it, and I want to keep it strong! I'm trying to learn a Blake poem rn and I feel such a special connection to every line when I learn them... who cares if im pretentious!!!!!!
