Don’t like the local bands in your area? Do your fav bands always skip your city? I know the feeling: it sucks. But it’s also okay! Maybe your city, like mine, has a really vibrant jazz scene. Or maybe, like mine, it attracts renowned classical musicians. Turns out there’s a tiny cafe near my house that country musicians from the U.S. travel thousands of miles to. Who knew? Don’t worry if it might not seem like ā€œyour thingā€ — just go, you could be surprised. There’s no point resisting, you have to embrace your city and play to its strengths. This doesn’t just apply to music btw, go and explore it all! Theatre, museums, galleries, sports, it’s endless…

This might not be possible for everything! But when I moved from a small town to an even smaller town for college instead of going to the big city school I’d wanted to, I was really disappointed and sad for the first few months. But then I realized we had some live music every so often and going out to the bars with friends scratched a similar itch to going to a city club without being overwhelming for me. Of course it’s not quite the same, but it’s something! I’m happier in a city now, but I do find myself missing my college town often. I think it was a blend of appreciating what I could get in that town thatā€˜s harder to find in a city (like my friends being guaranteed to be close to me and not 3 neighborhoods away), and finding what I could that can somewhat compare to city stuff, that made most of my time there enjoyable :)

this is something i should do much more of. every time i visit another city i scope out the best spots, hit all the sights, and pack in my days with fresh experiences.
once u live somewhere for a while u just kinda stop being excited and fall into a routine. there are still so many things i haven’t seen in nyc, and probably will never see, because 90% of my time is spent in my own neighborhood.
be a tourist in your own city

sometimes there are small towns 30 minutes to an hour out from you that are waiting to be discovered!!
just take a day trip to a town nearby and explore all it has from its local mall, cafes, bookstores, even to the parks that deserve a bit more local love! it’ll be worth the gems you find :)

The descriptions of smells in books is something that always sticks out to me. In Don Quixote, for example, it’s the chivalric scent of ambergris; in One Hundred Years of Solitude, the smell of Colonel Aureliano BuendĆa’s lavender-perfumed moustache lingers on the page. At the university library, I would often be blanketed by the warm, woody aroma of oud whenever a Muslim student walked past my desk. Smelling good makes you identifiable, it helps you feel confident, and it pleases everyone around you

Kind of obvious but asking yourself what you believe in is really valuable. There’s no pressure to have a deep-rooted belief system or to practice a religion, but having some sort of personal conviction about the world can be comforting and affirming

Argentine tango — get on it! Specifically nuevo tango, formulated by the great bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. It’s full of drama, heartbreak, and vaudeville mystery
