There were two Margarets in our family; she was 5’1” hence the nickname. Born in County Clare 🇼đŸ‡Ș - I doubt she even knew her real mom - and raised in poverty in LA by a relative once she had landed in the U.S. She made amazing oatmeal and tuna sandwiches when I was sad; she lived close enough to my parents that sometimes I would walk home to her house instead of my parents’ on the way home from school. I went through confirmation only because of her (didn’t believe much in Catholicism otherwise and still don’t). I lived with her for awhile one summer during college. She was an amazing roommate. I learned so much about life and our family. She was my favorite human, our family matriarch / badass and I miss her everyday. Thanks Gran ❀

i’m lucky enough still have a grandmother in my mid 30s—which I think is an age where you’re settled enough to finally get to know your adult family members on a personal level. The generation gap definitely means I’m always on my toes when we hang out cos I can never predict what she’s gonna do, but she’s funny and wise, makes friends wherever she goes, doesn’t give af, is a mean cook, can do quiet company like no one else, and loves me to smithereens.

living with your grandmother for any parasocial bitch that could possibly gaf and knows about niche internet celebs like me:) i took the semester off because of my brain and im living w my grandmother in the city in the smallest state of the world. my grandmother is loud and asks me uncomfortable questions but Im going to blame it on her age and not get angry she has so little time they were talking abt alzeimhers meds at dinner and I really hope I don’t get it the man there was talking about his pastrami parties where they all get around the table and pick add the fresh peppery pastrami sizzling out of the oven and how his father used to make pastrami in Brooklyn and that he had a pastrami business anyway an elderly woman just explained to me her peace and acceptance towards her own death If I go I go she said thinking why some people can go and be all peace and noncommittal what luck and privilege! to sacrifice your body and time to ur kids and ur husband and ur work and still have enough to have a country and community that loves you to be seen as worth peace even in death

Hey tyler hopefully this doesn’t violate some PI.FYI golden rule But after nearly two years of writing, editing and arguing, my book about the EP is coming out in May and can be preordered here: https://hozacrecords.com/product/aifl/ The book is about the origins, history and cultural impact of the EP since these little objects first started coming out in the 50s. Over 50 of my music biz friends then helped me shape the list and review the top 200 ever released, according to us (ha). For those of you who are into this kind of geekery/snobbery, I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love, as all books are! ❀

I will fail to explain just how much this band meant to me in the 90s. So I will borrow from AV Club who did a fine job of distilling it: “Unwound is the best band of the ’90s. Not just because of how prolific, consistent, and uncompromising it was, but because of how perfectly Unwound nested in a unique space between some of the most vital forms of music that decade: punk, post-rock, indie rock, post-hardcore, slow-core, and experimental noise. That jumble of subgenres doesn’t say much; in fact, it falls far short of what Unwound truly synthesized and stood for. Unwound stood for Unwound. But in a decade where most bands were either stridently earnest or stridently ironic, Unwound wasn’t stridently anything. It was only itself. In one sense Unwound was the quietest band of the ’90s, skulking around like a nerdy terror cell. In another sense it was the loudest, sculpting raw noise into contorted visions of inner turmoil and frustration.” R.I.P. Vern Rumsey. This is their finest song, from their finest album. I really can’t say enough about the sheer bloody minded genius of this group. đŸ–€
