It’s a tribute - 60s covers of various iconic Summer of Love songs by the so called Paisley Underground bands (Three O’Clock, Bangles, Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, etc) back in 1984. Rainy Day mastermind David Roback eventually went on to form Mazzy Star and is the visionary behind this whole concept. I wrote a lengthy feature about the whole Paisley scene for Magnet many moons ago but it still stands up pretty well: https://magnetmagazine.com/2001/05/18/one-nation-underground-the-story-of-the-paisley-underground/

Last night I attended an annual benefit concert that celebrates the life and work of David Berman. Last week, in preparation, a friend of mine whose obsession does not yet run as deep asked me to make a playlist. So I made this, as a (long) introduction. While it felt impossible to whittle the discography down to essential tracks, it seemed equally impossible to take a wrong turn in choosing, because every song he wrote had some magic in it. I figured I’d share it here too, so theres the link^

David Berman was incredible with words. A new rainy day track on loop, for me.

i met a senior couple at a garage sale in FL— one of the sweetest stories i’ve picked up. they had their first kiss together on his family’s boat at 7 or 8 years old. they grew up together & were always close friends even though they met other lovers & had their own families. over the years they’d talk on the phone for hours & hours. staying close, harboring looove! during the pandemic they left their spouses and fell madly in love together, at age 70. he is rebuilding the boat they had their first kiss on. they’re sailing this year.
