I used to look at it as a kid and feel transported into it. And then one day I was in the National Gallery in DC & I turned the corner and the physical original was right there !! FAUVISM FTW !!
by Matisse. I saw this one in person when I went to London for the first time and was absolutely gobsmacked. I don't think I'll ever forget the rush of warmth I felt seeing this piece. I went back to the Tate Modern like three times in as many weeks to see it again and again and again.
I first came across this piece when they had an entire exhibit around it at the MOMA in I think 2022 (?) The most fascinating element of this painting is that it used to be entirely in color and Matisse went over it with red. Thatโs why you can see some color peaking out. I think that is super cool. I was so enthralled with it that I decided to get a small post card of it. I keep it on my night stand, next to my bed.
I saw this little painting, High Noon, in a museum and I stood in front of it until I felt like I was in the way of an old man. I donโt know much about the painter but his window series is hypnotizing to me.
I love doing collages, cuz all you really need are magazine cutouts and glue. There's a very low barrier to entry, skill-wise AND supply-wise, unlike painting. Digital collages are fun too, but I try to have less screentime by doing the paper ones. If I want to re-use pieces instead of gluing them down permanently, sometimes I'll just take a picture of the current arrangement to immortalize it, and then start over on a new composition. That way, I don't have to constantly buy new magazines to get new cutouts. This is one of my favorite ones I've done so far:
if you have a job that lets u read in ur downtime, they're a great portable option that doesn't require you to invest full focus like you would if you cracked a novel open on the clock! plus they are cheap & open you up to all sorts of niche content you wouldn't encounter otherwise :)
