MIDTOWN/HELLS KITCHEN

IN PROXIMITY TO HELLS KITCHEN IS THE BEST, HELLS KITCHEN HAS THE BEST SALVATION ARMY IN AN OLD DIRTY BUILDING WITH GREAT FURNITURE AND TONS OF ACTUALLY THRIFT PRICED CLOTHING AND ITS CONFUSING TO GET INTO THE BUILDING AND ITS RIGHT BY THAT FREEDOM TUNNEL GRAFFITI WRITERS LOVE. MIDTOWN AND HELLS KITCHEN HAS SOME OF THE LAST CRUSTY WEIRDO OLD PEEPS THAT MAKE THE CITY FAB, LIKE PEEPS THAT MUTTER TO THEMSELVES AND HAVE WEIRD OUTFITS AND CLEARLY HAVE HAD THE SAME RENT CONTROL APARTMENTS FOR LIKE A BILLION YEARS AND KNOW EVERYONE ON THEIR BLOCK AND STORIES ABOUT THE “OLD NEW YORK” AND GET THE CITY MYTHOLOGY THAT WE ALL ARE SUCKERS FOR!!!!!!

Long walks to midtown

In virtually any weather at any speed walking from downtown to midtown is one of my favorite activities. If you are bored it’s just a really nice activity to do by yourself or with a friend. It's really meditative, you see neighborhoods change and can look at all these different things on the way. There are some fun places to stop on the way, like Kaluystayans and Dover Street Market or the Morgan Library. Once I arrive in midtown I like going to the Paris Theater, The Grill, or Ice skating in central park. MoMA can be fun too.

Times Square

Growing up on the Upper West (Upper Diane Wiest) Side of Manhattan, our apartment was close to Times Square. “How amazing,” I thought, “that this small area so close to where I live is also a place tourists come from all over the world to visit.” Times Square is where Broadway is and it’s a good snapshot of mainstream culture at any given moment. As a boy, I felt lucky to be able to walk through the square and enjoy the unique sights and sounds as part of my “ordinary day.” Later in life, it came as a surprise when I discovered people hating on Times Square. They felt that to identify as a “real New Yorker” was to despise Times Square. I believe being a “real New Yorker” is to adore Times Square. I suggest going alone. Sit on one of the new chairs. Gaze at the screens. Take a photo. Walk up the TKTS steps. Read. Write. Watch people. Like I always say, “If NYC were a face, Times Square is the lips, and we are frenching.”

Unemployment

This goes against the grain of my anxiety riddled brain, but if you find yourself in a bout of unemployment I encourage you to lean in. From what I read, this very platform would not exist were it not for unemployment. Granted I know this perspective sounds like and is a privileged take, but just know I have no idea where next month’s rent is coming from. I find that the psychic terror of not making money creeps in when I’m most idle, so I try to do one or more of these things a day to keep that feeling at bay: - Walk my dog - Go to a museum - Research for creative projects - Make said creative projects - Call a friend - Go to the gym - Read a book or long form journalism - Cook - Clean my house Eventually I know that the capitalist grind will rear its ugly head, as it always does, but for a brief moment in time it’s nice to just shut the door on its face.

Kuretake watercolor sets

Whenever I’m asked to design something I bring these babies out. Instead of spending hours in Adobe hell rendering a concept, I just sketch it out in watercolors, scan it, tweak it and add in dimensions. I can’t tell you how many people are blown away by this. The deeper we fall into a AI/VR/algorithm run world, the more handmade touches become a true sign of luxury and taste.
