I have a love/hate relationship with this state. This thought came up after I noticed how many people on here are from NYC. Not a dig at NYC, it’s cool but I love TX. I’ve lived here for about 15 years. I came into my own here. I’ve been to every corner of the state but haven’t been to every city. I like north texas the most but central will always be home. People here are friendlier than you’d expect. anytime I read an article about Texas I always assume this person has never stepped foot in the state. the preconceptions people may have about this state and its people are usually wrong. I could write more, and I probably will at some point. The thought of leaving it all behind breaks my heart. the song/band reminds me of home. super bummed they decided to skip us on their tour.

I listened to Current Joys' album "Wild Heart" a few months ago, but I didn't register or dissect many of the songs since I was focusing schoolwork. Recently, while listening to my Liked Songs on shuffle, "New York City" came on, and I was all over it. Perhaps I'm just biased, having plans to take a trip to New York this June, but this song hits in all the right places for a summer vacation-vibe. Current Joys' consistent nostalgic feel is naturally present in this song, like many of their others, though it's a much more upbeat track than what one would expect from them. For a Texas boy like me, "New York City" encapsulates everything I'm looking forward to in a trip to the big city; fear, memories, opportunities, and pure excitement.

i moved from philly to jersey recently (which doesn‘t sound big because they’re close (but trust me)) and i‘m in a really weird maybe very melodramatic state of mourn. i love where i’m from and who it’s made me and the GIFT of perspective i’ve received from growing there

The longer I live in NYC, the more I realize that I am a Southern girl at my core. I’m from New Orleans, and I probably go back there at least three times a year for at least 10 days at a time – partly because my partner and immediate family still live there, partly because I just love and miss the pure unadulterated heat. I fucking love the heat, and you know what? I really love the humidity. I can face 100% humidity with no problem – it’s actually pretty nostalgic for me. I love hot summer nights where the air is completely still and you can hear cicadas. I fucking love grits and a fresh buttery biscuit. I love Spanish moss hanging off of huge oak trees with giant branches that dip down and touch the ground. Lately I’ve been really into classic country music (shoutout Ken Burns’ Country Music PBS docu-series), old American folk, Appalachian murder ballads, and Les Blank’s documentaries set in Louisiana in the early ‘70s. Spend It All is one of my favorite documentaries and I recently watched Dry Wood – I feel deeply connected to both!
