"The house of mirth" by edith wharton

Every time I re-read The House of Mirth I'm rooting for Lily Bart to make better choices, but she never does and I'm always devastated at the end of the story. The 2000 film adaptation, directed by Terence Davies and starring Gillian Anderson, is also worth watching.
