A master at writing genre fiction as literary fiction. Multiple narratives, stellar characters, a time-hopping, pre- and post-apocalyptic plot, and a killer miniseries adaptation to watch once you’re finished

rodeoshrimp Sea of Tranquility was great, I feel like I'll appreciate Glass Hotel more if I ever revisit it, and didn't super connect with Last Night In Montreal, but I'll probably keep reading her work in search of the rush I got from reading S11. And I've never read any Morgenstern, but I've heard of The Starless Sea. will definitely try to check it out soon if it's as good as you say it is

martinez sea of tranquility definitely had me writing out notes to make sure i understood how it all came together lmao. and glass hotel didn’t really captivate me as much? but i saw a review that said her writing was “hauntingly lyrical” which i think is such a perfect description. also starless sea and the night circus are amazing, but definitely more magic/fantasy esc than mandel (:

rodeoshrimp I’m back and have read the Starless Sea! I wish I’d taken your note and taken notes because I was so lost so much of the time lol I think I might’ve enjoyed it more had it been easier to follow, but I can also see the similarities in structure to S11 and understand why it’s beloved

rodeoshrimp I believe the closest comparison to a book like The Starless Sea that I've read is Same Bed Different Dreams by Ed Park. Came out late last year, a little on the long side (at least to me since I tend to stick to books around 300 pages lol), but it definitely had similar energy and structure and mystery, and I think it'd be something you'd enjoy. :) Kindness is pretty easy when it's as simple as indulging in my favorite hobby, but I'd be so happy to hear of anything else you recommend!!

oops I didn’t read the book first 🤫 but loved the show! One of the most interesting post-apoc shows of the last while. better than The Last of Us… This has reminded me to pick it up, thanks!

I read this one because I was told station eleven was good, but was more interested by the description of this book. Now that I know I like the authors writing though I’ll be checking station eleven out soon. In Sea of Tranquility, you read a story that spans centuries, from the early 1900s, to the future spacefaring days. There’s something that ties these timelines together, and I was hooked from start to finish.

after just finishing re-reading this, as well as her novel Station Eleven, St. John Mandel is solidified as my favorite author of all time. never have i experienced a sci-fi story SO deeply rooted in humanity and being. i wept.

you maybe know this but posting jic: Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange just came out and it’s kind of a sequel to There, There?? I’ll be honest, haven’t read it yet and trying to avoid reviews, but it’s on my stack.
Exit West by Mohsin Hamid is fantastic. The story of two refugees fleeing an unnamed country, but has some elements of magical realism that really hit hard for me. short, but powerful.
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel does the multiple narrators/characters intertwining thing so well. still think about this one a lot.

I only saw her perform twice, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else live more than once (though I obviously would like to see a lot of them live again). At least I can say one of the times I saw her was her very first US performance 🥹💔
