I know a couple people who got back into reading because of her. I really like her books and find that they can help you narrow down what exactly it is that you like in a book (do i like fiction? Do I like books about relationships? Do I like contemporary lit? etc) and afterwards it’s easier to pick more things to read. Id start with Normal People which was also made into a great show as well so you can watch that after the book.

More broadly, read what you are interested in. I’ve gotten into reading again this year and it clicked more with me when my friend who is a big reader gave me this advice. I started by reading two books David Fincher adapted, Gone Girl and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Since then, I have read a Elmore Leonard book, who wrote Jackie Brown, and more light sci fi and magical realistic which lines up with my movie taste.

i’m an off-an-on reader as well and i’ve come to accept that a good rom-com is usually the best way to get myself back into reading. they’re easy, light, entertaining. i don’t feel pressured to enjoy the book for being “intellectual”. i’ve come to like Mhairi McFarlane bc her books are not too predictable and she explores wider themes beyond just romance. i liked Just Last Night and If I Never Met you

I was the same! What worked for me was changing how I saw books in my life. If you see it as a chore then it’s bound to be dropped. So I changed the way i approach it, now for me it’s more of a me-time, quality escapism. so it doesn’t matter the format ( audio books, fanfics, graphic novel, ebooks, before I was more judgmental), and if doesnt hooks me from the beginning I dropped it with no guilt. once you’re honest about what you want in a book (like for me it’s young women writers who overthink the day to day and how to live life) and share with your friends they begin to give great recommendations catered to you it’s a enthusiasm vicious cicle! I guess I would recommend thinking what was that hooked you before and being really honest with what floats your boat now…

Sometimes you can just exist. you don’t (hopefully) need 50 hustles. You don’t need to be a writer and musician and artist and podcaster and influencer and girlboss or whatever. you don’t even need to signal how cool or smart or attractive you are. I know it’s hard cause I think our society incentives (forces?) people to be “on” all the time, but it’s probably better for your own sake to just exist for yourself and your love ones and to adjust your expectations of what a successful or meaningful life is. Sorry for being pedantic, just know a lot of friends and family my age or younger that seem to be struggling right now in all sorts of ways. Just know, regardless of what anyone says or even what you say or do, that you guys have inherent dignity and you are worth something
