This is an easy way to keep a diary. You only have to jot down the things that make you really smile like “going down the slide at the park with Nick on the way home from the bar” or “putting on my new jammies”. Then later when you are feeling depressed you can come back and be reminded that you have been happy before.

Having something to go back to, as a living record of your feelings and your time, can be really lovely— when you’re in a season where it feels like many days are bad days, you have a record, written in your hand, of good days. Keeping a diary is a good way to practice being in love with yourself, and being disciplined in an artistic practice, and writing beautifully about your life. If you want to read a diary that I think keeps an excellent log and has interesting things to say about the act of writing a diary, May Sarton’s “House By The Sea” is really beautiful; so is Sylvia Plath’s diary.

I tend to have the most words when I'm angry, upset, or hurt. My journals, notes app, and artwork all can attest to this. When I'm happy life is easier, I don't need to write to feel sane or rationalize my feelings. I sleep well, I eat okay, I see people. I'm busy, I'm content. But this has the unfortunate side effect of not having my happiest moments stored in as much detail as my worst ones. I can find 22 notes entries with the word heartbreak but only 5 with the word delight. PI FYI is encouraging me to document the good. And I know I will appreciate being able to scroll through the things I liked this year in a way that I haven't been able to before.

“Wanna be friends?” is an underutilized tactic in adulthood. Kindergarteners know what’s up.

This is a type of walk I do almost every day. Walk in one direction until you hit a stoplight. Then immediately turn and walk in the new direction until you hit a stoplight and repeat until you get back home.
