when I visited my friend Nico’s house last winter, they gave me their own copy of ‘The Remains of the day‘ presenting it as a book that changed their way of seeing life. To be honest it is a very powerful and lovely novel, the characters feel very real but also very dreamlike, all of them are described with their own set of traits which makes this short novel a very nice time. it took a while for me to finish it but it’s very light. I wasn’t very familiar with Ishiguro’s work but this was a great introduction.

one of kazuo ishiguro’s lesser talked about novels (when compared with things like remains of the day and the unconsoled). it’s a really great character piece about a man who has to rectify with his legacy as an artist, a father, and a human being, under the backdrop of post-war japan. ono as a narrator is captivating because of how stubbornly warped his recollection and interpretation of his own legacy and life is, and it’s really enthralling to see how ishiguro paints (no pun intended) the man as simultaneously sympathetic but unapologetically fixed in his mindset of his legacy. its a poignant book on the idiotic male obsession with image and legacy in the eyes of the broader world, as well as touching on themes of guilt and aging. really good read!

On a Kazuo Ishiguro kick in the last few months. Fell for the beautiful, understated humanity of his work.

It’s by Kazuo Ishiguro. I love the style of writing. It’s sensitive and exciting and relatable. I also enjoy the philosophy behind the story that unfolds. And of course, the way it unfolds!

i think everybody hates small talk, but everybody is also very different from each other, I guess it’s a matter of being understanding with the person or people you’re talking to at the moment. But I do think that personal questions and talking about real life experiences is what gets conversations going, it’s also what makes you remember people and want to reconnect with them. when talking to somebody new there’s nothing better to a first impression than someone who engages and listens. We get what we give so might as well give as much as we can.
