Things done changed
And yet, almost not at all
Beijing is cleaner and sleeker but still full of charming little traditional hutong neighborhoods
Shanghai remains the most bling city in the world outside of Vegas
Hong Kong is less British outpost than global trading center but its harbor is nonetheless a world class hang.
I promise not to wait this long again.
I wish more Americans would visit and judge for themselves vs. just take the spoon-fed nonsense our media serves up. ❤️
Go now, while it still retains some of its old world charm.
I first visited here in the mid 90s and have kept my wistful affection and nostalgia for the place and its people.
Get on a boat and cruise the harbor. I promise it won’t disappoint. ❤️
Haven’t been back here since 2017.
Korean culture has exploded globally since then. So much change.
Yes BTS 💜 but K-pop more broadly and also “Parasite,” “Pachinko,” Japanese Breakfast (and Michelle's terrific memoir, "Crying In H Mart"), Mina Kimes on ESPN, Sonny the Tottenham superstar ⚽️ the professional golf phenomenon and just the sheer business brilliance of the chaebols and the tech-whiz underpinnings of this amazing country (go Google "ultrawideband" to understand just how pervasively online they are here and why digital payment technologies basically started here).
What a privilege to return.
And Tokyo (another all-time fave destination) is next up on this trip. ❤️
this is something i should do much more of. every time i visit another city i scope out the best spots, hit all the sights, and pack in my days with fresh experiences. once u live somewhere for a while u just kinda stop being excited and fall into a routine. there are still so many things i haven’t seen in nyc, and probably will never see, because 90% of my time is spent in my own neighborhood. be a tourist in your own city
The man responsible for dozens of Teenage Symphonies to God
"Sad songs about happy things" (the first time, as a kid, I can recall the sweet/sour combo of melodies that could make you cry attached to songs about endless, bottomless love)
I've long since lost track of how many weddings and funerals I've attended that have featured this song; suffice it to say, "a lot."
God only knows what we'd been without him 🙏🏻
Hey tyler hopefully this doesn’t violate some PI.FYI golden rule
But after nearly two years of writing, editing and arguing, my book about the EP is coming out in May and can be preordered here: https://hozacrecords.com/product/aifl/ The book is about the origins, history and cultural impact of the EP since these little objects first started coming out in the 50s.
Over 50 of my music biz friends then helped me shape the list and review the top 200 ever released, according to us (ha).
For those of you who are into this kind of geekery/snobbery, I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love, as all books are! ❤️
