Sue me, it’s not hard to be considerate of others the rare times we share space in our increasingly atomized world and I think we owe it to each other. (c.f. was just at the theater and the older woman in front of me chose to put her hair in an enormous top knot that no joke gave her an extra head’s worth of height. I politely said to her after the show that I wasn’t able to see most of the show over her hair and I hurt my neck trying to get past all the hair. Her only response was “Well I always wear my hair like that.” Anywho I just think it’s not hard for us to treat each other with basic care and respect on this dying planet, especially when we’re packed into small space spending a lot of money on art).

Especially in the film world where there’s often a feeling of scarcity, limited resources, and competitiveness, I’m a big believer in approaching people (friends, collaborators, acquaintances, strangers) with openness and a how-can-I-help attitude – it’s way more fun and interesting! In an industry that does not support up-and-comers, it’s important to remember there is room for everyone and we’re all in this together. Not to mention, being unkind, pretentious, or elitist is not actually cool and will not serve you well in the long run. People remember how you treat them.

I really don’t like when people treat other people badly. It’s unnecessary. the smile on their face could be covering a lifetime of pain, or it could be genuine happiness but how would we know? and either way, the way we treat someone could decide what their next day is like – could be a good or bad day based on a small interaction with little old me. but I’ll never consciously be unkind or hurt someone. we do owe each other something as human beings – kindness. being kind isn’t difficult. be kind. be thoughtful. be warm. be loving. be graceful. be patient.

applies everywhere but specifically New York, which can be such an individual place where you can get wrapped up in the grind. Tripped over someone’s foot the other day and I didn’t even look back to acknowledge or apologize. Thought to myself, what the hell man, be kind. Don’t let the roughness wear down your sense of humanity. This place soars when you keep a sense of courtesy.
