found this cracking applet that lets you zoom in on all the arms of the evolution tree/fork. they've mapped the splits to look like leaves on the arms of a tree, but the real big boy behind it all is that the evolution tree takes the shape of a branching fractal. (guys let me tell you bifurcation is a wonderful thing.) it also lets you map the pathways from our different common ancestors to living species now, and you can get a really good visual understanding of the evolutionary distance between us and other animals or bacteria. once again happy travels

omg i did my senior math paper on bifurcation in log functions, it’s so awesome seeing the word bifurcation in the wild. thank u for keeping fractal joy alive on pi fyi

kellxoxo !! i was trying to read this paper on the fractality of the evolution tree (maths was a bit dense lol) the idea is that the laws of evolution are log-periodic and that a fractal model works (on a statistical level) in representing the time lengths and splits we see in the archeological record. i reckon you'll get more out of it than me if ur interested, this is the preview link for the paper: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-0348-8119-7_25 its from "Fractals in Biology and Medicine Vol III" which u can find on a shadow library (i used annas archives but im sure libgen or any of the others would work too. not paying 80 quid that would be taking the piss) :))

Crazy. I wish I could’ve seen this creature. I got scared seeing its jaw. It’s nice to think it may not be extinct after all but I doubt it.

if you start zooming in on a pattern, and the pattern doesn't seem to get more simple as you close in, there's a very good chance you're looking at a fractal shape. my new computer hobby is going on google earth (clean setting - no borders or labels) and zooming into random places to see if i can find these patterns. and they are everywhere. in rivers, mountains, deserts, forests, coastlines and on and on. its genuinely stunning, and a little bit frightening, how the same shapes appear over and over again. the beating heart of iterative processes is plastered all over the globe at every scale. from above, the shape of a forest can look like a leaf, or a neuron, or a blood vessel. great place to have a zoom is at the bottom of tibet, where theres a sharp cutoff between the icy mountain range and the grassy forests of nepal and bhutan. pic below is of the nile river in southern egypt. happy travels everyone
