A tiny island 12 miles out into the Chesapeake Bay that feels like the setting of a Stephen King book. Due to rising sea levels, the island is destined to be underwater within 50 years. This is apparent during high tide when parts of the island become impassable. Less than 450 people still live there and primarily rely on crabbing & fishing to make a living just like the generations of watermen before them whose lineage can be traced all the way back to the 1770s. I filmed there for work in 2018 and stayed overnight at a b&b. There was no wi-fi, no cell signal, no cars, but, inexplicably, there were SO MANY cats crawling all over the island. I’m a city gal, so I was certain the place was haunted for all the reasons mentioned, but especially because people buried their dead on their own front lawns since their cemetery turned into marshland and several graves were lost to the sea. Just got back from a trip to Claddaghduff in Ireland. We stayed next door to the cottage we used to stay in when I was a kid. It’s opposite Omey Island which is a tidal island meaning you can walk over to it across the sand when the tide is out twice a day. It’s about a 4km walk to get to the other side of the island. I remember walking up to the pub to use their payphone and call the nintendo hotline in the 90s when I was stuck in my Zelda game. The pay phone is gone, but almost everything else here is the same. My bedroom faced Omey and nothing gave me more pleasure than watching the tide come in and out every day and shouting about how far in or out it was. Now I’m back in NYC and kinda devastated I have no tides to watch.

It’s the furthest barrier island in NC— I went for a month and I loved how isolated and quiet it was. I swam every day, you can surf and paddleboard and bike everywhere, and as a woman, living in a town of 200 people I felt so perfectly invisible— it was maybe the first time I felt totally removed from the male gaze, and having the complete freedom to go out in the world without being perceived was amazing. It’s very quiet, a good place to be with yourself and live undistracted.
