Ghost Lover by Lisa Taddeo is a book of short stories about older women reckoning with aging that I, a gal who does not like short story collections has read twice. It is BITING. Tom Lake by Ann Patchett is about a woman with adult children who had a fling with a starlet and now lives on a cherry farm. It was really sweet—nothing groundbreaking but Iā€˜m glad I read it. The characters in Biography of X by Catherine Lacey seem ageless but are middle aged—a woman whose secretive but famous wife has just died goes on a journey to discover who she was. It’s set in a reimagined America where the south has cut itself off from the rest of the country. Very hard to put down!!

Really inventive book that left me with Ferrante levels of excitement to come home from work and read. Itā€˜s about the widow of an enigmatic artist, who spends years after her wife’s death trying to piece together her mysterious background and write her biography. It’s set in an alternative version of the US where the South had ā€œdisunifiedā€ from the rest of the country. Those elements of the book were fascinating, though occasionally a bit gimmicky. The format is very creative and experimental, and not to the detriment of the plot.

just trust me on this one, this book slaps. short story collection by octogenarian debut author who used to be a psychologist and has keen understanding of human nature. completely flips society’s expectations of kindly sexless elderly women and presents a collection of stories of old women who are still very much horny, difficult, complicated, cynical, etc. plus the cover is cool af.

I listened to this one. The actual genius that Catherine Lacey is. This was the second novel of hers that Iā€˜ve read, the first being Pew. Both books make me think a ton about how I perceive myself, but Biography of X in particular makes me want to explode or something idk. Self mythology. Theme of the year. Who am I? idk. The end.

go to your local libraryā€˜s website or download the app. then search for a book you really want to read. then put it on hold. it feels like online shopping but it’s free. in a few days or weeks you'll get a cute text message or email that your book is ready to pick up and you’ll get to say hello to your local librarians and procure a new (to you) book which also feels like free shopping. the most functional part of our government ily public libraries

i usually find myself in reading ruts when i’m taking classes and being assigned books or when i’m trying to keep up with new releases and the ā€œsmartā€ books that are usually dense and long. i can usually get myself out of this rut by picking out a book that looks fun to me, like a book set on a beach or something I loved in middle school. I’m reading From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler right now and it’s just FUN!!! I also am very much not someone who feels like they have to finish a book. Life is too short. I think that helps!
