One of my favorite bands when I was in high school in Athens, GA. I saw their lead singer play last night and his solo work continues to be meaningful to me, but there’s nothing like hearing those classic Whigs tunes. I wish I had a dime for every time I heard some teenage boy play “Right Hand on My Heart” at a talent show.

‘Gish,’ the 1991 debut, remains an underrated psychedelic classic.
Billy Corgan was less Darth Vader here (these days he wears a cape onstage and is giving serious Empire vibes) and more pretentious, insecure suburban Chicago asshole who could nevertheless play the holy Jesus out of his Strat. 🎸 (There's a great video on the YouTubes about a three decade quest Billy undertook to get this yellow "Gish guitar" back after it was stolen from him backstage at a gig in Detroit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyjBDmEcKAE).
There's not a bad song on this album and the original quartet were an absolutely 🔥 live band. I remembering seeing them play at a 1000 person club in this era and they totally slayed.

🥁The White Stripes aren’t like my favorite band, not by a longshot, but Meg White is certainly the best drummer in the history of rock and roll. Pushing tempo as keeping tempo, genius. She was always so, so much cooler than Jack, now more than ever, given the fact that she’s essentially disappeared off the face of the earth and Jack is selling vinyl in Nashville or whatever it is he does.
