I freelance pretty consistently but have always avoided upwork and fiverr because the margins are so slim and seems scammy a lot of the times - are they more legit than I thought?
madden I have found reputable companies through both platforms but only after vetting heavily (for example: getting very granular on keyword searches, meeting over video, researching them on LinkedIn or their website first). Hell even Linkedin is a better start than either of the other too
you honestly might be better finding a contract gig or a more full time corporate or agency position, though youāll have a harder time landing interviews without any experience or a portfolio. honestly, make work up. seriously! pick a local business or a brand and create your own campaigns for them. redo an existing campaign that you think could be better or come up with something entirely unique. You could blog about that process. figure out what niche of writing you wantātechnical is very different from marketing which can be different from social media which is not the same as PR. challenge yourself to rewrite every piece of material you come across ā emails, flyers, commercial scripts. find local businesses that may be looking for ācreativeā or āmarketingā help. Iām a copywriter rn, I feel your struggle! DM me if you have more qs š
Iām in a similar boat where my career is something I enjoy, but I cannot deal with the people Iām working with. What Iāve found is that if youāve got the time, doing little creative projects for friends/ people whose missions you support is a great way to build a portfolio and strengthen connections. You can do it for money or favors, either way you get the satisfaction from doing your work, the physical material to use if (or when) you start looking for employment elsewhere, and a better connection with the person you worked for so theyāll be more likely to bring you back for another project! TL;DR - Freelance in your spare time, but donāt take a project you wouldnāt be proud to put your name on, donāt work for a person you wouldnāt want to be associated with, keep all that you can, and help bring othersā missions into reality without sacrificing your own values!
