I think I was like four or so? Mom was in discipliinary mode for some reason (being a "hard mommy") and so I took off down the street when she wasn't paying attention and hung out with the lady who occasionally babysat me and my kid brother. Vivid memory of watching Merrie Melodies cartoons in the front room/living room when mom came rolling in and looked like she wanted to kill me. This was olden times LBC and I'm pretty sure we were living in what ultimately became Crips territory -- wasn't so scary then but would be years later.

I have this very vivid memory of some time, around third grade or so, my family stopped on a roadtrip to check out a garage sale type thing in Virginia or West Virginia. I remember a kid about my age, he lived in the house we stopped at and I remember it feeling sort of like the edge of the world because it was on a hill, high above a valley. The grass was so tall and the ground, sort of maze-like, shown through the grass on paths of warm, dusty brown. The kid with a buzzed head, donning a white wife-beater (wife-lover, rather), I followed through the paths, exploring what felt like a big place. I wonder about them sometimes.

I was 3.5 when I became sentient, I had just been dropped off at my mom’s best friends house while my parents headed to the hospital to deliver my sister.
there are spurts of memories that fade in from there on, playing house under palm trees in Cali, getting pinched by a sand crab at daycare, summers at my grandma‘s farm.

my first memory is from when I was maybe 3 or 4 back when my family lived in the DC area. there were some woods behind my house and my older brother I were exploring in our pajamas for some reason. I ended up getting stuck in a thorn bush somehow and I was just standing there super scared not knowing what to do and I just started crying. my brother left to get help but in the moment i’m not sure I knew why he left which just made me panic more. pretty sure I wet myself too. eventually ended up being rescued and was probably totally fine 5 minutes later.

The man responsible for dozens of Teenage Symphonies to God "Sad songs about happy things" (the first time, as a kid, I can recall the sweet/sour combo of melodies that could make you cry attached to songs about endless, bottomless love) I've long since lost track of how many weddings and funerals I've attended that have featured this song; suffice it to say, "a lot." God only knows what we'd been without him 🙏🏻

Hey tyler hopefully this doesn’t violate some PI.FYI golden rule But after nearly two years of writing, editing and arguing, my book about the EP is coming out in May and can be preordered here:
https://hozacrecords.com/product/aifl/
The book is about the origins, history and cultural impact of the EP since these little objects first started coming out in the 50s. Over 50 of my music biz friends then helped me shape the list and review the top 200 ever released, according to us (ha). For those of you who are into this kind of geekery/snobbery, I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love, as all books are! ❤️
