coffee with chicory is the tastiest and perhaps least well known nola beverage tradition. it dates back to when louisiana was still a french colony. coffee was expensive, so people would cut their coffee ground with the cheaper chicory. it tastes smooth and sweetish but not sugary. blue bottle and cafe du monde both sell their own stupid expensive coffee with chicory blends, but cdm coffee is $3 a brick, totally delicious, and straight from nola. it’s also the house roast of the company that roasts coffee for cafe du monde (the name cdm is a wink to that). i cold brew my cdm in a toddy overnight and wake up to very strong, very smooth coffee that lasts my bf and me for a week and a half—all for $3!

I am a bit of a coffee snob and self-proclaimed cold brew expert. Here are my faves:
-La Colombe. Duh. Best of the best.
-Designers Collab. They have La Colombe, but not only that, they are ”bespoke”, so you can customize your flavors!
-Partners Coffee
-Quawah House (new for me, but it is fantastic!)

reading aloud to a friend or husband or partner is truly one of life’s little joys. swapping chapters back and forth is the perfect activity for a day in the park, a rainy afternoon on the couch, before dinner after a long hike on a camping trip, or in bed. i particularly recommend doing this with something silly, like a 1970s pulp fantasy novel or 1950s teen romance from the discount bin of a used book store.

how exactly do you live on two different coasts? that sounds unreal expensive. two rents? two electric bills? flights back and forth all year? how much money do you make? jk—how much did you inherit? listen, i’m also embarrassed to be a media type in brooklyn, but the fact that i spend christmas and easter visiting my childhood home does not mean i “live” in louisiana. be for real!
