Japanese reality TV about 6 young people living together as they figure their lives out. No challenges, no prizes. Just strangers living together, trying to make friends, working or looking for work, and sometimes finding romance. Tonally so different than American reality TV – way more grounded and way less flashy and theatrical. And the best part? Anyone can leave whenever they want and go back to their normal life, at which point they bring in a new person to fill out the 6.
I wasn’t trying to learn Japanese when watching but I definitely picked up multiple phrases pretty quickly!

Edit: don’t watch the latest one (Tokyo). I’m not sure which ones are up on Netflix now; the earlier ones are good but may not be available. If anyone needs a hand figuring out how/where to watch, lmk

whoever on tiktok said that reality tv is basically just sociology/anthropology/psych case studies is so real. the newest season is a bit slow but starting from the beginning is worth it.
maybe some of the worst people you will ever see constantly lying to each other and getting away with it. amazing television

Even though I am a certified Bravo Boy™, I do have a soft spot in my heart for MTV’s reality programs. My best buds and I have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours watching the Real World, the even better spin-off The Challenge, and of course, Are You The One. The show is basically about a bunch of young, hot people who all “suck at relationships” and are trying to find their Perfect Match: another contestant on the show, predetermined by the producers but unknown amongst themselves, who is meant to be their ideal romantic partner. I’m in it for the shitty laser effects, the snarky host Ryan Devlin, and of course, the never-ending drama. If you’re in need of a mental vacation, check out the first two seasons streaming on Netflix now.
