you can hook your library card(s) up to the libby app and check out all the ebooks and audiobooks your heart desires. you can also add multiple library cards to your libby account—which is great for people who want to share a libby account with their mom who lives out of state and new yorkers, who are allowed to have library cards from all three systems (the nypl, the bpl, and the qpl) no matter which borough you live in. basically any book you could want is available in any format you could want at any given time. and if they don’t have something, send your neighborhood library an email and they will buy it for you within a week!!!!!! fuck amazon & audible!!! long live libby! long live libraries!!!!!

Did you know that you can check out books from the library and read them on your phone?? Or a Kindle? (Superior experience IMO) And if you live in New York you can have THREE library cards at once and put holds on books at the Queens, Brooklyn, and New York branches to see which comes available first or simply scour all three for an old, dusty, rare read? It’s the best!

libby is an app that connects to your local library (through your library card #) and allows you to check out audiobooks and e-books. it works a lot like a physical library in that if they're not available, you can't check out book right away. you place holds on the books you want and they can take weeks or months until you can borrow them. i used to hate that, but if you have many holds (up to 12) then you can read/listen to them as they become available and by the time you're done, the next is likely ready to be borrowed. you can borrow them for 21 days at a time. there are other similar apps that offer similar things, some where you can borrow them right away, but libby has the best collection of books, including most new releases. i think libby blows audible out of the water, in that once you use libby, paying for a subscription and buying audiobooks seems absurd.

I am truly obsessed with the Libby app. If you have a library card, a phone, and an e-reader, it is a free library in your phone/tablet/whatever. Billions and bazillions of audiobooks and books and more for free. A great way to try new books or audiobooks at your own pace, and there are no late fees. Perfection.

reading aloud to a friend or husband or partner is truly one of life’s little joys. swapping chapters back and forth is the perfect activity for a day in the park, a rainy afternoon on the couch, before dinner after a long hike on a camping trip, or in bed. i particularly recommend doing this with something silly, like a 1970s pulp fantasy novel or 1950s teen romance from the discount bin of a used book store.

how exactly do you live on two different coasts? that sounds unreal expensive. two rents? two electric bills? flights back and forth all year? how much money do you make? jk—how much did you inherit? listen, i’m also embarrassed to be a media type in brooklyn, but the fact that i spend christmas and easter visiting my childhood home does not mean i “live” in louisiana. be for real!
