Gakuryu Ishii, 2005.
I often spend my days staring blankly at objects in my home, or listlessly wandering through the city in hope of temporarily ridding myself of such a foggy mind. Barely a thought, much less a coherent one. I watched this today, on one of those days, and it melted into me. I've never seen a film that captures depression in such a relatable, realistic and yet serene and even psychedelic way. It really is like this, in my experience anyway.
my goal as of late is to enjoy movies without having to think too hard and this definitely fit the bill. i too want to live a life seeking the mundane contentment hirayama feels when he looks at sunlight peeking through the trees and surrounded by his collection of saplings, books, and cassettes. also chuckled because i’m pretty sure i saw the toto and uniqlo logos in the credits, and now i too want to go to tokyo and use the tadao ando toilet.
Caught it at Metrograph last night. A true masterpiece about the nature of work and identity in Japan and beyond. I left thinking “maybe Sisyphus did have a choice?”
There is a gasp-inducing shot at least once every minute for the entire runtime. Crazy that this was made almost entirely in a studio, you'd never know it.
