I recently dove deeper into Numero Group’s reissue of tracks from Deep City Records, the Miami-based soul and R&B label founded by FAMU classmates Willie Clark and Johnny Pearsall in the early 60s. Really fun to trace the influences drawn from Motown, marching bands, and Afro-Caribbean music that created the “Miami sound” and launched the careers of great artists like Betty Wright, who recorded the linked song “Paralyzed” when she was 12 years old (!!!) 🐊🐊🐊 Supplemental: a solid YouTube documentary on the history of Deep City
