He’s my favorite contemporary author because he clearly has a good grasp of classical literature and its history, which means he can take inspiration from it and weave it into something more modern If you’re ever going to read his work I suggest starting with A Gentleman in Moscow

It's the only Amor Towles book I've read so far, but people do seem to talk about him as one of the greatest to ever do it. I cried several times at this one, and it is incredibly expansive given the restriction of the main character being stuck in one place for the whole book. I won't say more than that.

Towles has quickly become one of my favorite authors. This year I’ve read A Gentleman in Moscow, Rules of Civility, and now this short story. This one’s pretty different from the other 2. While Moscow and Civility both have a calm/relaxing “everyday life” tone to them, even during the more hectic scenes, this one reads a bit more fast paced and frantic. The story explores gene manipulation and basically “nudging” your child into a future of your choice. To avoid spoilers on such a short read, I won’t go into more detail on the plot but it’s a reeaal fun and quick read.

I love how Gogol uses magical realism and satire to be like "yeah some people are really vain and classist in Russia rn. and some of the men here? yeah, super misogynistic with a fragile masculinity." also, special mentions, White Nights by Dostoevsky and The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. I love all of these stories for different reasons

why do we have so much stuff, why is it so hard to clean all this stuff, why are we so excited to get new stuff, and why does stuff say so much about who we are

I was just thinking of this recently, of how oversaturated the internet feels. There’s too many platforms, content, and ads being shoved down our throats. I don’t know where the internet is headed but I feel like there is a growing general sentiment of fatigue. We’re also discovering ways to combat this fatigue, like lessening our screentime or simplifying our use of the internet (like this platform.) I would love to see this general sentiment dictate where the internet goes instead of the internet telling us what to consume.

I suddenly thought of this movie because Brazil (the song) started playing. I wouldn’t even know how to begin describing this and anyway it’s better to jump in without knowing too much about it, which is exactly how I watched this.
