It’s the instruments and sounds that does it. It sounds apocalyptic. Lots of BOOM CRASH and deep hums. Hums so deep and visceral that you start to wonder if this is what Gabriel’s horn would sound like if it were Judgement Day. It’s loud and continues to get louder and louder until you start to feel claustrophobic. Your heart starts racing and maybe you sweat a little bit. Then it manages to reach the deepest parts of your heart and you start to empathize with Joy. This must be how Joy feels being made to live with the fact that she will probably never experience a life of self-expression, vulnerability, and contentment. Her essence sucked out of her. A woman named Joy who never experienced joy in all her 30 years of living–how ironic. At the end, it’s got you looking up at the hollow sky, feeling disconnected and disillusioned, too.

🎶I love the music of Annette Peacock. She is one of the true great freaks of music. She’s a poet! A composer! She also is one of the first people to ever run her vocals through a Moog synthesizer. I’m really into this live album she made with the pianist Paul Bley in 1969. It’s called the Bley-Peacock Synthesizer Show. It’s so insanely beautiful. My favorite song off of that record is “Mr. Joy,” which is basically pure romance to me. It sounds like what it feels like to be in love! Peacock’s vocals are distorted through the Moog, creating this cozy and weird level of dissonance. It’s perfect.

The song is an instrumental that’s literally 17 seconds long and I feel that the whole album needs to be listened to in order to fully take this last song in. Adore is about loss (the loss of a mother, the loss of a lover, the loss of friends and collaborators) and the process of carrying on. Corgan says in his poem that “17 seconds is all you really need” to find that peace after loss, but is it really? What if more time is needed? 17 seconds is short. This song is short. The abrupt end is too jarring. Abrupt endings in life are too painful and it leaves you thinking, “What now?” Well, 17 seconds is all you’re going to get because life moves on. Shit hurts, but you have to move. on.
