Alain Delon is the slick predator. Dennis Hopper is the wildcard. Matt Damon is the bleeding heart. Malkovich is Malkovich. Barry Pepper is the invisible kid. Andrew Scott is the black hole. I wrote about all of the on-screen Ripleys on my substack:

I don’t know if he’s well known at this point, but he came to mind when I looked at your profile. Sean Penn as Spiccoli in Fast Times would be easy and fun. Someone else needs to chime in with some contemporary ideas!

Been seeing that White Lotus --- a show that I have never had much interest in --- scene and it is reminding that Sam Rockwell is a cold ass actor. I'm happy that he is floating on the timeline again because he is a very good actor. Here is a guy who can turn a character into something insanely memorable by pure charisma and weird charm. Now, he won the Oscar for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and while that movie is sometimes frustrating, I do think it is a good portrayal of anger at social class that is manifesting itself --- or possibly just because of it --- towards hatred of identity groups. Rockwell is very good in it, getting the better of the showy McDormand performance. But, to me, I hated that he won the Oscar portraying such a dodo bird. He had played such cool and interesting characters -- he even becomes a weirdo as Hammer in Iron Man 2 --- and he understood how to be sly and dopey while still maintain a kind of honest mentality that made people want to root for him in every movie. He's better when he isn't pudgy, isn't striving; in a way, he is a comedic actor at best. Watch Moon, where he plays a lonely astronaut in space. He is also great in Richard Jewell as a sympathetic lawyer. Character actors like Rockwell deserve publicity, especially when they're doing something unheralded.

So I’m learning about Jim Jarmusch bc I’m watching Stranger than Paradise and I saw that he started a “tongue-in-cheek” “secret society” of men who look like they could be the sons of 1950s actor Lee Marvin. Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Josh Brolin, and the protagonist of Stranger than Paradise, among others, have been inducted into the Club. Details of their activities are hazy. Crucially: I finally have a crisp way to describe cartoony full-lipped bowling pin head white man physiognomy [e.g. Bret Easton Ellis, Ron Perlman, Anthony Bourdain]

Not every idea is a good idea. But maybe a small part of it is, or maybe it can grow into one, or maybe it will lead to the next good idea, or maybe you just need to get all those lousy ideas out of the way so the good ones have room to breathe. Or maybe it just feels good to write and this fixation on good vs bad ideas is the thing that’s in the way.

Recommending this for myself because I never do it but when I do it always helps me get what’s inside outside.
