it feels so good to watch content you actually do wanna watch. i regularly clean my following list. i only follow good friends and i only follow influencers, who dont make me want to die after watching their content. personally i hate those clean girl aesthetic influencers or those people who show off their bodies that look heavily edited. thats just not real life at all. i always felt bad about myself after seeing someone be so skinny or so strong. but those influencers never tell you their journey. they never tell you how to get there, and they certainly never tell you that it isnt real. they only show you their best side and it looks like theyre like that at all times 24/7. i mean, i get it. especially instagram can get soo toxic, that you dont want to show your real self. or those influencers that try to sell you stuff youll probably never ever need in your life. i see those amazon finds tiktoks on my fyp and i think to myself: who the fuck needs those products? you almost always can use different things you already have in your home. on tiktok i also click on not interested every time i see a tiktok im not interested in. if you click on details you can actually decide what irks you about it and give a reason why you dont want that on your fyp. and if you encounter someone really negative, block them. normalise blocking people and accounts, please. i found so many racists and homophobes on my fyp, and i really do not need that. blocked. i never have to see them again. it really is that easy. i genuinly advise you, that you follow people who teach you stuff. especially if its your interest or hobby. learning by watching random videos or posts on your feed is sooo much better than having an existential crisis. i follow cleo abram on youtube for example. she makes positive science content and i really enjoy it. and i follow kurzgesagt, too. its better instead of watching videos that tell you nothing gets better or makes you insecure. that only destroys your day. im not telling you to only listen to self help podcasts or only watch those mental health influencers, not at all. if thats not your cup of tea, than dont do that. i just want to tell you guys that cleaning your feeds really is good for your mental health. and ive always said that.

which is partly why i downloaded perfectly imperfect. i don’t exactly have a solution yet but so far here are my ideas : -youtube is maybe a better alternative so you don’t miss out on pop culture stuff. if maybe you follow a few youtubers who talk about recent news, trends and events you can keep up with what’s happening. with ytb you can actually sit down and watch great content without scrolling. you just have to stay strong if you’re tempted by ytb shorts. -there is an app called « beeper » which reunites all the different convos you have with your friends and followers on different social media apps like tikto, insta, whatsapp…etc. it allows you to keep talking to your friends without being tempted to scroll afterwards -another tip i’m seriously considering doing too, is keeping up with your fav artists by going on instagram on your laptop (if you own one). i think it’s more difficult to scroll mindlessly on there and that way you can see what they post and log off 5 min later. maybe you can even activate a little notification to see everytime they post so that you don’t miss out on anything -finally i feel like going on a huge unfollowing spree can help sort out the content and poeple you really want to follow and care about i’m still figuring out how to manage that balance too ! hope we can help each other

Concentrate on accounts you follow, and expect to run out of things to look at. Avoid “for you” and “suggested posts/videos” - when you’re out of Following posts, you’re done :) People have said the internet is full of horrors, and I know that’s true, but I haven’t experienced it. That’s not to brag, just to show it’s possible! And I have spent my time on Tumblr, Reddit, pre-Musk Twitter, YouTube, instagram. Link goes to a post with specific advice for IG and YouTube. I don’t think Twitter can be used this way anymore, and you will have junk shoved into your feed no matter what. Maybe start fresh with new accounts to reset everything, too

once i got realistic about what type of content i consumed on ig and twitter, i realized so quickly it was not expanding the way i think and in fact was keeping me stuck in the same (oftentimes negative/harmful) thought loopholes. social media is addictive in part because it algorithmically reproduces the way we already think. it keeps us comfortable. start questioning: what can help expand your life? what other creative and consumptive outlets do you find fulfilling? is there a book you want to read? something you want to draw or write about? or, in general, consider how your older self would have wanted your time to be spent. you are so right that social media makes us feel Bad-- but we don't have to! it is an act of self-care and deep love to work on stepping away from things that hurt! as far as practical tips, the best things that helped me were: a) like some others mentioned, deleting ALL social media apps from my phone so i can only access them on my computer. this helps because the online interfaces are a lot clunkier so it reduces some of the quick gratification that keeps you addicted. also you have to be literally sitting at a desk to use it, so the portability aspect/mindless scrolling is largely removed. b) keeping a journal because it's a much safer space to dump thoughts than a private story c) prioritizing in-person connection rather than mediating relationships through tech-- meet a friend for coffee! cultivate intimacy rather than superficiality, and notice how irl vs. online connection feels different d) nervous system regulation and grounding practices to counteract how scrolling can make you anxious/stressed/disembodied! finally i did struggle a lot with fomo and being behind on trends at first but then i realized it doesn't really matter. trends are fleeting. even without chronic online-ness i am still funny and relatable and i find it much more interesting to hear about people's lives when i haven't been informed about them in an endless information stream online!!

i have seen so many protests for palestine in the last few weeks and saw so many people not protecting themselves. here are some tips (this is all my opinion and not at all by a professional, if there even are professional protesters): (partially ripped off of tyrathetaurus on twitter) first of all: protesting is good. if you have the privilege to attend protests for a good cause, definitly do it. you can inform yourself for every protest in your city online, it really isnt that hard. just look for the protest, your city and than 2024, or whatever year. second: many countries have the right to assemble!! i know of USA and Germany. its a human right to assemble and protest. dont forget this! third: the police is NOT your friend! they are not there to protect protesters, they are there to make it more difficult for you. we have seen this in BLM protests, we are seeing this on uni and college campuses for palestine. whatever you do, try not to talk to police. 1. how to stay safe: - write phone numbers on your body, write your name on your body - DO NOT go alone to protest. always have at least one person with you. if you see someone alone, help them, stay with them, invite them to protest with you. - put your phone on airplane mode, disable Face ID and fingerprint, use a PIN-Code, change your phone case to a black one, if you dont have it already. - never take pictures of others with out their consent (this is self explainable). try not to take pictures and videos of people that could be easily recognised. - dont wear stuff that can be easily recognised. wear stuff that hides your face and hides your skin. - WEAR A MASK!!! not only can it protect your from diseases, it hides your face incredibly well. - DO NOT talk to anti-protesters and police. youre doing more harm than good. its better to ignore than argue. 2. what to do if stopped and/or detained by police; what to do if youre threatend with or under arrest - dont resist. they will attack you - make sure someone is recording you, the officer, and the situation - ask if youre free to leave. if yes, WALK AWAY - ask why you are being arrested. if they dont answer: ask for legal represantation - DO NOT give personal information, everything will be used against you. Your rights if youre stopped/detained: - you have to give consent for the police to search your stuff. if you do, everything will be used against you - police can pat you down if they suspect a weapon on you 3. what to do if you see someone being detained - film it. police cannot view or delete the footage - talk to the person, calm them down. they are likely nervous and scared 4. USE YOUR PRIVILEGE!!! help the disabled, help possible minors, find medics for harmed or someone having a panic/anxiety attack, help BiPOC if theyre harrassed, etc… 5. if you are a minor, you should NOT protest, unless your guardian or a trusted adult is with you. remember: DONT GO ALONE 6. if you cant participate, HELP THE PROTESTERS!!! drop off water, allergy friendly food and snacks, sharpies, cards with helpful phone numbers, masks, hand sanitizers, etc… 7. cant protest at all? BOYCOTT AND REPOST!!! doing even something small is ALWAYS better than doing nothing. inform yourself https://bdsmovement.net/ especially if you are a minor: reposting stuff online, telling and informing others about the situation and boycotting IS HELPING. please stay safe, go protest if possible, always help others.
