if you're trying to improve your craft through reading poetry, ocean vuong is your guy. my favorite poem of his is def "Wood Working at the End of the World" vuong also has this instagram story series about metaphors and it changed the way i went about writing metaphors forever. def check him out

maybe my answer is basic, but despite always having loved writing poetry i haven't actually read much of it until recently. we covered this poem in a course i was taking and it's just so good.
i just finished Ocean Vuong's "Night Sky With Exit Wounds" and it was so good as well, one of my favorites was "Thanksigivng 2006".
another poet i could recommend is Aimee Seu, i'm hoping to buy her book "Velvet Hounds" soon, a poem i love by her is called "Thrift Store Fur".
lastly, another poet i really love is chen chen. i really recommend reading "Summer"!

I got into her the same time I got into Ocean Vuong, so theyâre linked in my mind! Her collection Soft Science is one of my favourite poetry collections, and her poem The World Keeps Ending and The World Goes On (from the same titled collection, excerpt below) is so good.

and donât feel pressured to enjoy everything contemporary or all the classics or whatâs popular or what weâre taught in school. thereâs truly no right or wrong way to enjoy poetryâbut not everything appeals to/resonates with everyone so if ur feeling like ur bored or not âgetting itâ that might be an invitation to try a different style!
like i didnât really like ocean vuongâs time is a mother, but i love richard sikenâs crush. i love mary oliver, lucille clifton, and frank oâhara; but i donât like ts eliot, emily dickinson, and allen ginsberg. there are no rules and there are plenty of kinds of poetry to explore! you maybe just havenât found what you like yet.
i also suggest finding accounts on other social media that post poetry and/or sign up for poetry fdnâs âpoem of the dayâ emails. and when you find a poem you enjoy, check out that poetâs collection(s) at the library and read through them! :)
