Any art you may practice, walk in some woodland or pasture make some poems, write a song, paint, even competition can be an art. Whatever fills your soul and give in all the way. when im alone during important or significant times I love being selfish with my time and immersing myself in craft, be selfish after all there is isn’t anyone around that could be offended.

I feel like every year I burrow further into life, everything accelerates faster and faster, becoming more complex and confusing (and sometimes feeling so dark and serious). I feel like I’m always playing catch up with things that have happened, processing them weeks to months to years after they’ve occurred, or only fully appreciating a moment long after it’s passed. My best art and thinking has been when i was  alone in the middle of the night , with no noise or anything around to distract me.I’ve been really into sitting and marinating in a quiet moment (going on a hike, looking out my apartment window in silence at night, journaling, reading an engrossing book, drawing) and attempting to detach myself from the small details and my day to day worries.

think about it, join me: maybe journal, maybe clean, maybe egg, maybe egg sandwich. perhaps guitar or favorite record or long shower. refill water whenever you need it. gaze up at a tree from underneath for too long or not long enough or maybe just the right amount of time to realize you have blanket and limitless afternoon and warmth of people you love, and you sit down and look at all of the moss and tiny mushrooms and patterns of the bark and exist within the smallness of yourself in the big wide universe.

whenever im feeling more lost than usual, in myself or the world, something that really helps me find my center again is just going to the water by myself.  she will always be there for you whether that is through river, pond, fountain, or sea. you will quickly find she wants to take all your troubles away.  try to just sit there with the water and nothing else as best you can, don’t go on your phone, don’t read a book, if you really really need to do something, listen to an album and don’t skip anything or bring a sketchbook to doodle in. just try your very best to be in the moment and nowhere else. if you are at the beach (my favorite place to be with the water) try to keep your eyes on the horizon where the sky meets the ocean. or for any location just look at the patterns on the surface and notice how light dances across it. let the water be a fidget toy for your eyes. there likely will not be any huge aha moment but i promise if you really intentionally spend time with the water, talk to it even, you will leave feeling different in some way. (here is a little collage from my last solo beach day. the most important part is that you do all this by yourself. have a one on one with the water and she will tell you what to do next)

beer and weed help but that can be messy business when performing so make it easy and just don’t be the person on stage. I had a band and before we had to break up I played a lot in-front of very drunk and very cool people so I was very nervous but rock and nerves don’t go good together. I kinda made Buck for that he wasn't called that then but having some sort of separate character for performance helps. You don’t have to go all Ziggy with it Buck looks like me, dresses like me, sings my songs but he’s a lot more confident and energetic. why? How? Because he is.

I normally put on podcasts/audiobooks/albums that I’ve been putting off. Stuff like So Tonight That I Might See by Mazzy Star was recommended to me a bunch but I just never had time to listen to the whole record without being interrupted so when I drive 4ish hours home and back I put it on plus a bunch of other records. did the same thing with other audio media I’ve ment to grab but hadn’t yet I’m sure you’re already listening to music but going front to back on a album or book is a different vibe

This is coming from a guy that loves 60s and 70s rock and folk and owns like 100 something LPs. Get CDs instead, you can play them in cars, on stereo systems, and portable CD players. cleaner than tape with no warble or belts to worry about and easier to store than LPs, only downside is the art is small and usually no fun insert's. I’d only get your absolute favs on LP they are probably gonna be expensive (30-70 bucks compared to 5-30 for CDs) but having the big cover, often times lyric sheets or posters, and my favorite part the back cover you’ll NEVER see on steaming. Sound great and really make you feel like you own a substantial part of the music. make sure you have shelves deep and tall enough for records too if you buy them. media Trade stores are the best if you aren’t already looking there. TLDR: CDs for practicality LPs for gems
