Absolutely love when I go back somewhere I used to live and see that an old haunt (cafe, bar, etc) is thriving. I lived across from 3 Little Figs in Somerville 10 years ago and it was wild to see it bustling beyond belief with a huge line out the door - and some of the same people working there and my favorite items still on the menu. Good for those guys!
I love trying new places + have a list of places I’m slowly working through. But I’m realizing that tried & true places that have been around for +10 years are still standing for a reason. You’re usually paying a little more $, sure, but you’re getting consistency & quality & ambiance (Balthy at christmas time is heavenly). Minetta Tavern is a classic. The Odeon has its own cult following that’s well worth it. I’m sure places like Don Angie’s have the potential to be there in a decade, but until that happens I’ll be happy with my old fashioneds & nice napkins.
Don’t get me wrong I love trying a new place, but I’m not gonna be a sheep and just constantly exclaim “I love trying new places!!”
Because I also love the places I’ve been to many times, and know the whole menu, and recognize the waiters etc. etc.
