Genre: Post-punk From: Middleton/Manchester, UK LP: Script of the Bridge (1983) I just read that The Chameleons appear on the Lisa Frankenstein soundtrack (the equally fantastic ā€˜Up the Down Escalator’) so no better time to dive into maybe the greatest post-punk band’s discography. I promise you, their debut LP Script of the Bridge will not disappoint.

Californian post-punk band that I have been listening to constantly these last few months. They got their start as a solo project scoring soundtracks for fake horror movies and it eventually evolved into its current form. Personal favorite songs by them: Valley Ghoul It’s in my head Blue Sheen

For me, the 80s began musically when this little-band-that-could from Athens GA dropped their understated debut in 1983. Imagine how crazy this sounded amidst the backdrop of Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Springssteen’s tidal wave of MTV hits: 1. Indecipherable vocals and lyrics that appeared only to describe the waking dream, if anything at all 2. No guitar solos of any kind. Just arpeggiated jangle - like the best Byrds you’ve ever heard 3. ā€œLead bassā€ and a second lead vocalist who also wrote half the songs. Mike Mills was their secret weapon. They were ā€œcollege rockā€ before it existed. The template for indie. Weird art kids and record collector nerds who started miles from the mainstream and retired three decades later as the biggest, most influential band in rock. Walked away. No regrets. No dumb reunion cash ins. No bad albums they’d later regret. They remain my heroes and any interest I ever had in playing rock music is because of them. ā€œI can hear you/can you hear meeeeee?ā€ šŸ’™

Underground Chilean punk under Pinochet's neoliberal death regime that is as interesting historically as it is cutting edge. When I first heard this album I thought it was another Minor Threat copycat (shockingly similar!) but they both developed at the same time in scenes that don't seem to have overlapped until at least the 90s. I'll defend my DC hometown heroes until the end, but the vocals and passion in Los KK might make you reconsider which band should have gained international fame. No diss to Ian MacKaye

I produce and host a radio show called Electrique Boutique, which plays minimal synth, cold wave, dark wave, post punk, diy/private press electronic music, and anything else that fits the vibe. If you’re into Kraftwerk, Closer by Joy Divison, Cold Cave, Molchat Doma, Black Marble… your stripped down, lo-fi electronic music, then maybe give it a listen! It airs every other Friday 6-8 PM PST on 104.9 KHUH Hollow Earth Radio in Seattle, but all of my episodes are archived on my website (in the link).

If you’re in the Seattle area, I’m hosting an 80s dance party at The Black Lodge on June 26th! Masks are required and we will have air filters going. Expect a Paradise Garage/Larry Levan-esque vibe, with disco, house, electro, new wave, leftfield, and other hi-energy gems. This has been literally a multi-year project of mine and I’m so so so so so happy and excited to finally see it come to fruition. Hope to see you there!!!

Documentary following the lives of kids living alone on the streets of Seattle and how they survive. Now living in Seattle myself, it’s deeply unnerving to recognize exactly the area the film mostly centers on (and the still-present circumstances presented), which is right about two miles from where I’m typing this right now. In every interaction these kids have, they are nevertheless endlessly endearing, brimming with personality, conflict, and dreams. I can see hints and glimmers of so many people I know in all of them, and it’s both captivating and terrifying at once. All presented without agenda, judgment, and sentimentality. A heartbreaking But important watch.
