Thereā€˜s no headless horseman in Sleepy Hollow. Aliens aren’t snatching people up in Pine Bush. The angel statue in Iowa City isn’t killing teenage lovers but the stories give the town personality. So, maybe you start telling people there are fairies under the bridge, or that the fountain in the park stops aging for a day. Maybe it will stick and become a part of real town history.

whether they involve ghosts or time warping or crop circles, I love to listen to people’s stories about their brushes with the unknown….this is one that happened when I was around seven years old, and recall so vividly it plays like a movie in my mind: One morning, when my sister and I were very small, my family took us to Santa Fe to visit our uncle. We stayed in a gorgeous old adobe hacienda-style home, with my sister and I sharing a room. One early morning, our first one there, my sister (around four years old at the time) woke all of us up when she ran out of the bathroom absolutely hysterical, screaming that a man was in the bathroom. My parents, jumping to the conclusion that there must’ve been a peeping Tom in the tiny stained glass window adjacent to the toilet, scoured the area for anyone, or any sign of anyone. of course, they found nothing. Later, when she was calmer and more intelligible, my sister told us a tall man wearing a coat and hat had appeared directly in front of her out of thin air, and she’d had to run around him to escape the bathroom. That evening, when my parents described the incident to my uncle (an architect whose boss graciously allowed us to stay in that house), he told us that while his boss had made jokes about the place being haunted, he never would’ve guessed it was true. if you have a creepy story you’ve been itching to tell, help us set the Halloween mood at Gilded and send it over! We want to read it for our upcoming Halloween special. Our hearts (and Google form) are open to you ā¤ļøšŸŽƒ

I swear to god do not sleep on cemeteries or act like they’re creepy. cemeteries are impossibly peaceful. All those people, simply just resting there, chilling in the afterlife. I love to take a stroll through a cemetery and hang with the oldest headstones since it’s unlikely they have living relatives still visiting them. I also highly recommend a picnic. The aesthetic is unparalleled and you’ll feel a welcome sense of calm as you enjoy your cheese and crackers. My only word of warning is that if you visit frequently enough, the spirits might get accustomed to your presence and not want you to leave so be prepared to talk out loud and tell them it’s time to go when it’s time to go. also, you should go somewhere else before heading home in the unlikely chance something a bit more sinister attaches itself to you… like I said, unlikely but you still gotta be careful when spending time with the dead. my latest hyperfixation is indigenous and ethnic folklore from non-western countries and cultures and it is so fascinating how so many beliefs and superstitions are essentially just about respecting nature and the dead so that nothing bad happens to you and spirits don’t get mad at you.

No screen Sundays. If I want to listen to music its CDs or radio. If I want to watch a movie, no I don’t. If I want to see a friend, I will make plans with them on Friday or Saturday to meet up. As a result, I read more, write more, and sit with questions like ā€œdid Citizen Kaneā€˜s 50 year winning streak in the Sight and Sound critics choice survey end in 2012 or 2022? When did Stephen Merritt come out? Whats the etymology of Whitsun?ā€œ This is something that I have practiced off and on for many years but I’ve been doing it every week since December and I love the way that it just allows me one day of true freedom and rest.

My calendar this year has 52 of these week at a glance pages but I don’t think that way. So, I've been inspired by Ross Gay’s Book of Delighs to start recording the little moments and sensations that bring me joy throughout the day. An analog pi.fyi, if you will. heres some of what I have so far: - Waking up to the sound of my upstairs neighborā€˜s footstep. It sounded nostalgic. Felt like company. - Strawberry jam - feeling tender for strangers: their lips, nail colors, their small wrists. Thinking of all the lives we hold gently. - A young girl bought an LP at the bookstore just before I left. She stroked its cover with love - Green tiles —the mint shade always makes me think of Jancie - Charlie’s little bop and punch dancing to some German language punk - lunch with Katherine, curry Brussels sprouts - small talk at the photo studio. The photographer's brother was named after their dad, stole his identity, bought jet skis.
