this song gets me every time. the singer takes her time revealing the words, leaning slightly behind the beat in a deliriously satisfying way. the beat feels stoic and steady, while she sings, with very direct words, exactly how mistreated and betrayed she has been by her lover. and she goes in on him too. slowly enunciating the words to emphasize her anger yet her voice remains strong and elegant throughout the song. it makes me feel connected to the power of being a woman.

yes, we all recognize “somebody that I used to know,” but not enough appreciation is given to this wonderful gem that sounds like you’re crying whilst riding a camel and wistfully smoking a ciggie. so much is going on in this song and it’s powerful from both an emotional and compositional standpoint. the lyrics “love ain’t safe, you won’t get hurt if you stay chaste” are so beautifully painful and I deeply appreciate music that can completely tear me apart with such eloquence.

Have heard this played live twice and it reduced me to tears on both times. it really gets to the heartache and exhaustion of restraining yourself from loving someone who will break your heart again and again. sometimes putting yourself first is a hard thing to do even if it’s the right thing
