because this is the summer of hobbymaxxing i went birding for the first time today and it was so relaxing! a great way to get out and truly appreciate nature in all of its glory. i used to be afraid of birds but i found myself awestruck by the natural beauty and grace they exude.
if youre anything like me and have been consciously trying to reduce screen time/phone use, birding is a great activity because (1) youre outside and (2) youre actively searching for birds with your group!
check your local parks and rec for opportunities!!

you should download birda!! it seems great for beginners and if you already have data on merlin or ebird it lets you import that to quickly add all of your sightings. it also allows u to follow other people and share bird pics :-)

This is literally reversing so much damage caused by social media and screen addiction. And you can bird in groups so it's just a bunch of nerds (said lovingly) not using their phones just walking around in the woods and pointing out cute birds. This hobby is amazing

If you need an excuse to go walk in the woods for hours on end, go to a marsh or forest and just watch birds. Feel the calm of the outdoors with the only sounds being your footsteps and the chirping of birds. Bring binoculars, or a camera, or nothing!! Nobody needs to even know what you're doing, you may even see a creature you've never seen before.

read from 2021 abt modern counterculture, rejecting tech overlords, and the dark forests of the internet
"To be truly countercultural today, in a time of tech hegemony, one has to, above all, betray the platform, which may come in the form of betraying or divesting from your public online self.”

well-written article analyzing cronenburg's films and contrasting them with today's sexual politics and lack of eroticism.
passage i enjoyed: In fact, we are not impermeable packages of preformed desires, importing our likes and dislikes around with us from one encounter to the next like papers in a briefcase. An erotic craving is inextricable from the ferment that foams up when oneself is sluiced into another. Not only is it impossible for us to know whether an encounter will be deflating or transformative but we cannot know what sort of metamorphosis will ensue if the sex is as jarring as we can only hope it will be.
