It’s good to get epically read on your appearance, cadence, and words rather than deeds. Public speaking is an opportunity for critique and ridicule from folks on the other side of the culture war. While you may totally disagree morally & aesthetically (so on the fronts of truth and vanity), an laconic assessment by an account with a Trumpian gift of gab can be inspiring, assigning fresh diction in self-description. For example, in a work video where I agreed to be a talking head buzzing about a policy hypebeast of a topic, I came off vapid and only fractionally educated. I had to mute my displeasure as it was uploaded to socials anyway. Only a couple months later did I revisit the flop of a post and like a light in the dark, found a hidden reply which I eagerly clicked to reveal: an account with a statement against government corruption as its profile pic, calling me a female ā€kill gatesā€ - wow, I thought, that’s actually so funny. Now I can’t get it out of my head, looking in the mirror like you got me! maybe you’ve seen similar success with conservative/libertarian/conspiracist accounts who revel in glibness, but the real golden bullets will be friendly fire. I’m awaiting a soul-scouring drag from a Maoist letting me know exactly what type of liberal I am…. until then, embrace your epithets, exploit the tilt! It keeps you light on your toes, doubly so if you fancy yourself a prose stylist. Please share any trenchant hate comments you’ve received.

If you’re from brooklyn or new york city or just moved here, i know, this is cliche. But i! Don’t! Care! The truffle popcorn is addicting, even if I'm farting for the rest of the movie, it’s worth it. Plus they have cute little trailers to gab about with your date or friend, but i also go alone because nobody tried to have small talk with you at the movies and you can just disassociate peacefully in blissful high-power air conditioning on a hot nyc summer day. They have guest curators on a monthly basis and do fun screenings of old flicks. Highly recommend it. Nitehawk > Alamo.

I have another indie theater that I prefer because it’s cozier, has better vibes, is much closer to me, and everybody who works there is genuinely passionate about film. It’s not really anything special visually but it’s a beautiful institution and it’s so fun to be there ā¤ļø But this one is an old art deco theatre designed by architect John Eberson (he designed Loew’s Paradise in the Bronx and the Paradise Theatre in Chicago)! It’s pretty run down/poorly managed and staffed but it’s a gorgeous building and definitely worth visiting. Not my photos but included for illustrative purposes!!

Again, I'm using this category as an umbrella so I can list my favorite movies that I think by watching will make everyone's life better or at least distract you from whatever bullshit is going on in your own life for a moment, and put a smile on your face. Maybe you'll even relate to what the characters in the films are going through and you'll feel a little bit less alone and it will change your life forever. These are my favorite movies that I watch over and over again: An Unmarried Woman, Swingers, Annie Hall, Broken English, Girlfriends. Last Days of Disco, and Hannah and Her Sisters.Ā And one of my favorite theaters to watch movies in in New York City is Metrograph. A sanctuary. A safe haven. The programming is extraordinary. And they have a wonderful restaurant upstairs called The Commissary. Run don't walk.

what school? What degree program? how is it being funded? why do you want to go to grad school - professional reasons? Do you want to enter academia?Ā  don’t pay an institution whose investment portfolio you have serious ethical qualms with for a master’s degree - but you probably know that. Ideally you go somewhere where you get a TA or RA-ship and your tuition waived and where graduate student workers are unionized. Having done the PhD app process this past cycle, it involves a lot of cost benefit analysis, self interrogation, and vulnerability - keep stewing on the tension. Somewhat related, breakdown of Columbia’s finances from earlier this month by Adam Tooze. Maybe a good reminder know that the academy’s labor can audit the system?Ā

The current season with the bald poly guy who started the 2k acre wildfire and that’s why he has trouble taking accountability in relationships…. Magnificent climate nonfiction
But also actual couples therapy if you need it. I’m obsessed with this show. I love seeing people work through their issues (or not). I’m fascinated how Dr. Orna guides the process. I’m a therapist but this is not my forte at all and I am fascinated!
