The Deck
great podcast that brings attention to cold cases that need publicity and are close to being solved
Itās in relation to the cold case playing card decks (a deck w cards featuring a photograph and factual info about the unsolved case) these decks are passed out to hundreds of thousands of inmates and bc of them there are multiple cold cases that have now been solved
itās legitimately investigative reporting and brings awareness to a good cause they also donate majority of proceeds to a foundation that helps provide resourses to help solve these homicides
Itās definitely gory at times, and sad, but itās interesting if youāre into that sort of thing Cults
Literally just discusses different cults throughout the world and history and why ppl join them/ how cult leaders come to be
Some episodes are gruesome and some are crazy interesting in the sense of how much some cults have impacted culture as it is today itās really insightful
deep dives on schemes, scams, or corporate / political scandals are very interesting and generally not insensitive about violence in the way the ātrue crimeā genre can be, i donāt really like the ātrue crimeā genre bc of that so here are some outside that main realm, either recād to me (irl) or that i have listened to that are really interesting:
- the dropout: follows the rise and fall of everyoneās favorite girlboss and founder of theranos, elizabeth holmes and how she got a bunch of funding to start a healthcare company based on fake science! and also how she got found out. (if you enjoy it, thereās also bad blood: the final chapter)
- hooked: tells the story of a famous bank robber and also the US opioid epidemic (together)
- queen of the con: really wild, this woman literally conned a bunch of professional athletes out of their money just by lying all the time
- youāre wrong about: they have episodes on all topics (like urban legends, movies, politics etc) but some are on famous ācrimeā stories and debunking common myths, like flight 571, tonya harding, etc. imo it is not sensationalized the way some of the āmurder podcastsā are but possibly bc itās not a true crime podcast
- mother country radicals: set mostly in the 1970s, it talks about this guyās experience growing up with the Weather Underground, and their many militant radical actions (like, they literally bomb the government, rob banks to fund their organizing, prison breaks etc)
- the dream (season one): basically talks about a ton of MLMs with crazy examples and some of the more well-known ones!
It may not be for everyone but I am obsessed and cannot get enough!!
Itās mainly a true crime pod if you arenāt a patron but itās soooo brilliant and done so well with hard work.
Highly, highly recommend
In this regard, to what I like to call a funk.
I feel trĆØs dookie. Lots of change in my life, and in times of instability I tend to fall off the horse- in a major way. Like many ppl. This past go round I have been excessively hard on myself over my general lacking in⦠well almost everything. Ive come to the conclusion that there are times you have to give yourself more grace than youād like to. Maybe the pity party can last a couple more days than usual. I wonāt go into details, bc as those of you reading who have dealt with mental health struggles, it can be sort of gross. Sure. Thereās a ton I could be doing to put an end to my funk. Make more of an effort to dig myself out of the hole. But, at the end of the day I know I will come out of the funk in my own time. Faking myself out, and convincing myself Iām feeling better serves no one.
Making yourself feel worse over feeling bad in the first place is just wildly counterproductive. Just keep moving forward in time. Thereās a lot of it <3
Rough week... Months, rough months. Decided on a whim to crash w my friend an hour outside the city for a while. I was lucky enough to finish my mural early. First night here and I already feel a good bit better :)
