If there's a cover of a song I love I'm gonna listen to it. Keeps the song fresh, adds variety and gets you more connected with the tune than one recording could. You could find a new favorite version of a song or better yet find that the selection of alternate recordings reflects a larger range of moods. The world wide web is your oyster. In mind right now particularly are Lou Reed's '84 Live in Italy version of Satellite of Love, Helvetia's cover of the Misfits song Hybrid Moments (Helvetia's cover and demo game in general is crazy), MJ Lenderman's take on Knocking on Heaven's Door (Knockin')—MJ also has a stellar live album—any and all versions of the Weight by the Band but specifically Nina Simone's, the Denzel Curry remix of BALD! by JPEGMAFIA. And any live Dinosaur Jr. Happy listening 🍻

FOLK MUSIC SONG-COVER CULTURE

there’s a thing in (particularly 20th century) folk music where artists across decades cover the same songs over and over and over again. i think it’s a beautiful museum of distinct times in history and i find it so interesting to see how artists have adapted the same songs to apply to the modern world and themselves as musicians. everyone and their mother (exaggeratedly) has made some version of the song “in the pines,” from lead belly to the kossoy sisters to joan baez to dolly parton to nirvana—and they’re all so wildly and beautifully different. the differences in lyrics and even melody are a clear representation to me of music as an oral tradition, and i think it is so fascinating and amazing to truly think about the ways in which humans share and change art over time. i love people.

NINA SIMONE: TO LOVE SOMEBODY

1969 Nina album where she covers the Bee Gees (title track), Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne,” the Beatles’ “Revolution” and several Bob Dylan songs (her “Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues” might be my favorite cover of a Bob song from anyone). She and her band just sound amazing.

taking up space

i keep finding myself feeling embarrassed when i post a lot on this app, but im having fun!!! and the genuineness of humans in this weird little online community is filling such a void in me that began to stop believing that people really are Good and Kind. in other words, i’m grateful for everyone here and i’m going to keep flooding this silly little app with my silly little words
