I was "going through it" in a terrible way last year and coincidentally discovered Grouper at the same time. She helped, immensely. No other artists capture the same mix of sadness, ambiance, wistfulness, and strangeness that she does. Every track is utterly beautiful. If you want something more upbeat, I also suggest her surf-rock shoegaze project Helen
such a gorgeous album, somewhere in between familiar shoegaze and UK trip hop. the siren vocals, the massive attack beats, the field recordings. perfect album. i’ll be at the philly ortliebs show end of march, probably solo probably weeping but in very dignified and compelling way
This album probably had one of the biggest influences on my own songwriting. It also came out on my birthday during a rough year and really helped me sit down and just feel everything. I make sure to only listen to the whole album at a time, but the opening track rules on its own as well. An honorable mention goes to "Chimera" by Asunojokei, another blackgaze band from Japan.
Hilarious! Bizarre! Super bizarre, super hilarious, cosmic Japanese sketch comedy movie. Completely unpredictable. If you feel like you've seen it all and you like Strangers with Candy and Kids in the Hall
