idk if it 100% counts as propaganda since animal cruelty is a real problem but i think PETA does far more harm than good i’m a HUGE animal lover and they have stuff targeted towards young people so i saw some of their videos on social media etc and was really compelled by their messaging. i went vegan and everything! (i never joined a club or anything IRL tho). thankfully i’m a Big Learner and love to read so i eventually started learning about the issues within the idea that vegan = ethical. i also started learning about marine conservation and it was wild to me that PETA was barely talking abt the seafood industry, which is literally causing entire species to go extinct! they have 0 structural analysis in general. so anyways i got over that ridiculousness by the end of high school, and then in college i learned about the farmworkers’ rights movement and their labor issues which further shaped my views on the subject. i’m currently mostly vegetarian/flexitarian, try to get cruelty-free products, still strongly oppose factory farms etc but i know i have a far more solid and nuanced view on sustainability and animal ethics at this point. because ultimately bigger-picture i think it’s an issue that lies within capitalism, which leads to mass production of all food which is bad for both people and animals (plus white supremacy’s abuse of the land and patriarchal approaches to the treatment of animals)

The idea of putting animals down was daunting to me… but it turns out so was the idea of going to school to learn the dewy decimal system

I had never heard about this before but someone referenced it in a Nextdoor thread where people were roasting someone for saying they saw a wolf… I have recurring nightmares all the time where I’m walking at night and I see lion and tigers and bears (oh my)! The way this is written is so compelling. What a tragic and bizarre story I can’t believe we allow people to own exotic pets :( ā€œOnly once you slide up and down these slippery moral slopes can you see how much easier it is for all of these owners to believe that they are acting with kindness to animals that they love, and that their love is on some level reciprocated. Maybe something went very astray with Terry Thompson, and so of course it is now in the interests of the other owners to draw a firm line between what he did and what they do, but my hunch is that if one had visited him a few years ago, he would have expressed the same love and care and concern for his animals, and done so with conviction. The truth is that while, on a practical level, we may feel as though we can distinguish between better and worse owners, it is logically impossible to know for certain what the animals are thinking or experiencing. Every human who interacts with an animal and then makes claims about what that interaction means to the animal—in backyards or zoos or even on the plains of Africa—is making a claim neither they nor anyone else can verify.ā€

being traditionally cool is really quite boring and iterative, and it’s actually very cool and sexy to geek out about something you like or share bits of knowledge on a topic you’re passionate about

i had it for a little over a year until i was like wow this is actually terrible! i genuinely think it has negatively impacted society by ruining people’s attention spans, having a horrific algorithm, and most of all by the most mind-numbing or outright harmful trends - fake words that people now use IRL (ā€œunaliveā€), trad wife tiktok, shein hauls, body-focused fitness vids that encourage fatphobia and unhealthy habits, shallow political/feminist theory and queer discourse, ā€œalpha maleā€ podcaster tiktok, encouraging overconsumption in general, trends ruining local spots or niche things… the list goes on
