The extended play, the EP: More than a single. Less than an album. With an immediacy that flies in the face of an LPâs âgrand concept:â an EP turns out to be a great way for an artist to write a few songs and get them out quickly, without fanfare or pomp. A short, sharp shock to the system that can serve as a musical snapshot whereas an LP might represent a full photo album. My friend Britt Daniel from Spoon calls the EP "a dodge" and I get what he means: "The EP is a musical sweet spot where you can be on your own, under the radar, secure in the knowledge that what youâre making is just for you and those who love you enough to follow you anywhere." Underrated form factor.

I recently watched The Monkey for free at Chicago's Music Box Theatre â and even stuck around for Perkin's Q&A session. I have to say, it was the best movie-going experience I've ever had. An organist played the score with diabolical cymbals in the background â come on! And the movie was hilarious and equal parts gory!

I will fail to explain just how much this band meant to me in the 90s.
So I will borrow from AV Club who did a fine job of distilling it:
âUnwound is the best band of the â90s. Not just because of how prolific, consistent, and uncompromising it was, but because of how perfectly Unwound nested in a unique space between some of the most vital forms of music that decade: punk, post-rock, indie rock, post-hardcore, slow-core, and experimental noise. That jumble of subgenres doesnât say much; in fact, it falls far short of what Unwound truly synthesized and stood for. Unwound stood for Unwound. But in a decade where most bands were either stridently earnest or stridently ironic, Unwound wasnât stridently anything. It was only itself. In one sense Unwound was the quietest band of the â90s, skulking around like a nerdy terror cell. In another sense it was the loudest, sculpting raw noise into contorted visions of inner turmoil and frustration.â
