An incredible NYC band that never got their due. Some of their story has been told in Meet Me In The Bathroom, but watching this live performance really shows how white-hot and chaotic they were. This is one of the last gigs they played before they broke up, and it’s like watching a star supernova. Stewart Lupton is obviously amazing, but Paul Maroons guitar playing in particular is so underrated, like Rowland S. Howard meets Ennio Morricone meets Ron Ashton. He’s also a Gretsch player which I respect.

An official bootleg I'm very happy to own on CD. my favourite band of all time, and their energy in shows is beautiful always, but something about this recording is completely unmatched. It's probably my favourite live album ever. Their back-to-back sets Alivelectric and Aliveacoustic are also very good. Also quite partial to STRFKR's Live from Brooklyn Steel, and Les Rallizes Dénudés only has live albums, but '77 LIVE is a great psych noise rock show. It just now occurred to me that you might be talking about concerts specifically and not just live albums, so I'll also throw in that I saw They Might Be Giants in Ithaca, NY for their Flood 30th anniversary tour and it was a real delight. They pull out so many tricks that I was just wowed by!

It was 4AM and I was in the home of two complete strangers, a French Canadian couple I’d met at a bar earlier that night. Initially I thought maybe they were angling for some sick sex experiment to spice up their marriage but it turns out they just wanted someone to do cocaine and talk Israel-Palestine with. I was only interested in one of those things though. I was about to go home but made one request before I left. I asked kindly if the man in capri pants, drinking a red stripe with his feet up and playing edm from a Bluetooth speaker connected to his phone would put on one song for me, Madonna’s “What It Feels Like for a Girl.” He shrugged and put it on and they went back to talking about how Israel was actually super fun or whatever and I quietly got up and started dancing. This must have surprised them because pretty soon they stopped talking and watched with horror forming on their faces. The song ended and I asked for a cigarette for the road. As far as I was concerned these people hadn’t done enough for me. Free cocaine and cigarettes were the least they could do considering the show I’d just put on for them. I don’t remember exactly how I got home, no train route from that neighborhood to mine that would make sense and no record of an Uber, but I made it home nonetheless and awoke the next day in my bed feeling pretty stupid about the whole ordeal. Nights like that make me sad, make me feel irresponsible and reckless, like I need to value my life more. I was feeling regretful and somber, I had a slight headache and if I wanted to I could cry on command, so I was in the ideal state to be seeing Mark Kozelek (red house painters, sun kil moon), one of my absolute heroes, that night at the Roxy.

For those that are unfamiliar green soap is what is used to clean tattoos. I know this sounds crazy but arguably this could be one of the best smells on the planet. I feel like I’m on my strange addiction every time I get a tattoo cause I just want to smell the green soap bottle but I promise I’m not insane it smells amazing and is probably part of the reason I keep getting tattoos.

This is my go to coffee shop in nyc. Before covid they would be open late serving really creative cocktails and playing albums on vinyl. Since then they’ve not really brought it back but I still love going since they don’t allow anyone to use laptops which creates more of a social environment. The coffee is also some of my favorite in the city and they bake everything in house.

An old friend of mine would talk about this book a lot. Finally got around to reading it this past fall and it just sucked me in. July has such an incredible imagination and ability to craft worlds with her stories. It inspired me so much, and has really changed how I think about my own lyric writing
