It sounds counterintuitive to best practices, but in all honesty ābadā mixes (i.e. not mixed by an engineer) make songs sound/feel more earnest in a way. The inconsistencies and crunchy bits can really tug at the heart stringsšļø
David Byrne said the prettier a singerās voice, the harder it is to believe them. that could go formixes too! I listened to a lo-fi album recently and realized Iād been missing thatsound.
I think the instrumental is the most important thing for me, and in some ways can speak more powerfully than lyrics because it isnāt as limited by language and interpretation, and can be a more raw outlet for emotion- like Iāll often think a song is about one thing from just paying attention to the instrumental and then go on genius and feel Confused. But also a well timed line in a song can hit extremely hard and remind you of the universality of human experiences or be super funny or make you feel confident, especially if itās a song you know very well and a line you havenāt thought about much before. I have noticed that most of my favorite songs, even across genres have a similar sonic cadence and kind of gravity? If that makes sense? And that peoples favorite songs are usually attuned to a super specific wavelength that I canāt fully verbalize but encompasses their being. Sorry if thats stupid and thatās just taste but also Iām really tired.
Iām working on an ambient piece and just realized something: checking the mix as I go speeds everything up.
Yes, thereās value in separating the roles ā composer, producer, mixer ā but in the end, theyāre just hats you switch between.
The meanings you didn't intend to create, the way textures layer unexpectedly; sometimes in the process of fighting for space the low-ends of my percussion and the melody work in conjunction to create a ghost bass line
The creation process can feel especially susceptible to incidentals if you use Audacity as a DAW like a SICKO FREAK So if you want to rewrite this to actually be a recommendation: using Audacity as a DAW like a SICKO FREAK
Honestly just a really cute multifunctional seasonal accessory. Like they look really cute, buffer the sound in your surroundings a little bit, and you can pretend you donāt hear people whenever you feel itās necessary.
the Joy of Missing Out is criminally underrated. Imagine wanting to go to somethingāthen deciding against itāonly to find out it wasnāt that cute to begin with
A compilation of long-winded anecdotes blurring the lines between memoir and speculative fiction. Covering everything under the sun: love, lust, mental health, addiction, mourning, etc. If you resonate with his visual work, this isnāt much a departure and I think you will enjoy.
