Octavia Butler can be hit or miss for me but I am appreciating the alienness of the aliens (the books are about aliens) I am also suffering through Kingdoms of Elfin, as a 6 year old might suffer through a brussels sprout
Weird, poignant freaky sci-fi. I just read the first book (Dawn) and immediately went and got the second one. Just ignore the cover designs that don't match the tone of the books at all
If you haven't read the Patternist series, you're in for a treat. Short, startling, speculative afrofuturist sci-fi with characters that live and breathe. No one does it quite like Butler. I would suggest reading the series in publication order the first read through, and a few years later when you start missing all the characters you fell in love with (or hated), try in chronological order and seeking out the forbidden/renounced fifth book in the series as well.
