From: Cardiff, Wales Genre: Post-hardcore LP: The Difference Between Me and You Is That I’m Not On Fire (2004) Easily among my top 10 favorite songs of all time, if not top five. Perfect riffs, lyrics with obscured meaning that nonetheless evoke some intense feelings, and a subtly intricate composition/song structure. Pump your little fists in the ā€˜Our old singer is…’ part.

I first found this song right at the beginning of 2024. My first reaction was ā€œDamn! That’s a perfect song.ā€ My reaction now is… the same thing. The lyrics are a little bit cryptic and nonsensical and that’s quite alright. This is one of those songs that is what you make it. The tone is upbeat and bittersweet wrapped together, making it a perfect song to associate with specific memories, like I know I have.

I've loved this album since high school and still rediscover it every few months, less and less lately, but every time I do it reminds me why i bought it on cassette online so I could play it in my shitty bluetooth-less Volkswagen driving around the jersey shore. Such a perfect album. Pink chimneys in Maine Couldn't keep me away.

For some reason I thought of this one although I haven’t listened to it for years. It just has this nostalgic feeling you got even after the release back in 00’s. It both has very simple lyrics and complex guitar melody. It’s so Bob Dylan coded but almost just a product of its time. It pats you on the back but you don’t know when you became a friend. It makes you listen to it quite a few times to decipher it (but luckily unsuccessfully).

I produce and host a radio show called Electrique Boutique, which plays minimal synth, cold wave, dark wave, post punk, diy/private press electronic music, and anything else that fits the vibe. If you’re into Kraftwerk, Closer by Joy Divison, Cold Cave, Molchat Doma, Black Marble… your stripped down, lo-fi electronic music, then maybe give it a listen! It airs every other Friday 6-8 PM PST on 104.9 KHUH Hollow Earth Radio in Seattle, but all of my episodes are archived on my website (in the link).

From: London Genre: Noise pop/dream pop EP: TOTEP (2018) Turns on a dime from a perfect dance pop song to utter chaos that flirts with harsh noise like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Sarah’s voice is the little lillypad you’re floating on through it all. It’s a wild ride.

Documentary following the lives of kids living alone on the streets of Seattle and how they survive. Now living in Seattle myself, it’s deeply unnerving to recognize exactly the area the film mostly centers on (and the still-present circumstances presented), which is right about two miles from where I’m typing this right now. In every interaction these kids have, they are nevertheless endlessly endearing, brimming with personality, conflict, and dreams. I can see hints and glimmers of so many people I know in all of them, and it’s both captivating and terrifying at once. All presented without agenda, judgment, and sentimentality. A heartbreaking But important watch.
