Good ice breaker then you can ask follow up questions. Do you have pets? Do you like cats? Have you been to a cat cafe? If someone only answers without asking a question back, just volunteer your own answer and see where the conversation goes. take it all in stride, you got this 🩷
you learn a lot about a person when asking about pets or what they did that day. it creates some sort of connection through similar interest. most people like pets, even if they don’t have them. and learning that maybe someone went swimming and you like swimming too, it creates a new bond over something!
keep it light and whimsical. I was on a date a few years back and the person I was with asked me if I believed in luck, she said it was a question she asked everyone and it sparked an interesting discussion- “do you have good/bad luck” “do you know anyone with particularly bad luck“ etc.
other questions that might be fun:
-are you a cat or a dog (in essence, not preference)
-what’s the furthest from home you’ve been?
-ever seen a ghost?
asking questions encourages connection between people (even if it’s short)!! like asking a barista what they like to drink, or asking the marine educator by the tide pools about the fish in there, or asking someone in a wait line what they do for work. obviously respect people’s time and space, but going out of my way to ask questions has lead to positive outcomes! Not only do you connect with people, but you might learn something or meet someone cool :)
