was walking through the Musée d’Orsay alone after a breakup, contemplating renunciation and renting a turn of the century efficiency apartment with an iron bed when i got back home, and this painting stopped me in my tracks.

An incredibly pretentious first share, I know. But when I saw this painting at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (brag) I had an almost visceral reaction to it. Which is rare for me.

it’s one of his fourteen Black Paintings he painted on the walls of his house in his last years. this was in his dining room. all of the works in the series are haunting but this one stayed with me (literally, it’s now my phone case)

i used to do this for a living and it was a job that only got attention when we made a mistake, and is taken for granted when done right. i captioned the 2018 world series game that went 18 innings, plus pre- and post-game coverage, for a total of over 8 hours on air with no breaks but commercials. now i smile when i see a bar is playing a game with the captions on. a real person is on the other end working hard to give you the best experience!
